What are Pink Dolphins ? ‏Pink dolphins ( 白海豚 ) are related to the humpback dolphins. They are usually grey or blue in colour. Only those around China ( 中華白海豚 ) have naturally pink skin due to the blood flowing close to the top of the skin. Pink Dolphin

Appearance Measures 2.2 to 3 m long, although the males are usually larger Weighs between 100 -230 kg. The Pink Dolphin's tale is relatively big and it has 2 flippers. It has small eyes. The Pink Dolphin can turn its head completely round, due to it’s un-fused vertebrae. The two subspecies differ in color and size of their dorsal fin. Body structure

Habitat They are found in most places around Southeast Asia, but there have been sightings from South Africa to Australia. Here in China, they mostly reside in the Pearl River Estuary and between the sea and the rivers North Lantau is popular for it’s dolphin watch, although the plans for reclamation and certain already reclamated areas have greatly reduced the sightings Map of dolphin residence

Reproduction Chinese White Dolphins generally live in groups of 3-4 They mature between the ages of 10 -13 They mate from the end of summer to autumn. Young are born after 10-11 months and are taken care of until able to hunt themselves. Females can give birth every three years or so The average White Dolphin can live up to 40 years The age of a dead dolphin can be discovered by observing the cross section of it’s teeth. Reproduction Cycle

Increasing Dangers Boats (ferries, dinghies, etc) are disrupting their daily lives Pollution in the form of garbage cause bacteria and then infections Landfills and reclamation are leaving dolphins stranded away from their homes Overfishing is reducing the amount of prey for the dolphins and the government do not have laws restricting amount or size of fish Fishing cause dolphins to lose prey

How can we help? Write to the government for the saving of these “critically endangered” species Support WWF or similar organizations Adopting a dolphin will support their life and help protect them Eat less seafood Don’t buy marine animal products as this encourages the owners to get more Use more bio-degradable products as many may end up in the sea Cut down on petroleum usage, because petroleum is shipped in boats. When these ships crash, they spill oil into the sea. WWF Organization Symbol
