Worshipping the Three in One
In His Upper Room Discourse, John 13-17, Jesus taught us how to respond to each Person of the Trinity. Worshipping God as Three in One should be at the center of our daily relationship with Him.
3
God the Father is the Fountain of Divine Love
Jesus uses 3 titles for the First Member of the Trinity in the Upper Room Discourse: The Father – God – Vinedresser The titles remind us that the Father is the source and fountain of all the Godhead’s purposes for us.
4
God the Father is the Fountain of Divine Love
In biblical times the father was the source of life in a family. A father was the source of provision and leadership to sustain and give identity to the family.
5
God the Father is the Fountain of Divine Love
“God (the Father) so loved the world, that He (the Father) gave His (the Father) only begotten Son (Jesus), that whoever believes in Him (Jesus) shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16 Jesus wants us to see the Father as the source of the love behind the Son’s work for our redemption (cf. John 10:14–18).
6
God the Father is the Fountain of Divine Love
“For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.” John 16:27 “…The word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.” John 14:24 “Even as You (Father) gave Him (Jesus) authority over all flesh, that to all whom You (Father) have given Him, He may give eternal life.” John 17:2
7
Responding to the Father as the Fountain of Divine Love
Pray to and address your prayers to the Father. “In that day [after Jesus’ return to the Father] you will ask nothing of Me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He will give it to you… you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you… and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father” (16:23–28).
8
Responding to the Father as the Fountain of Divine Love
Honor the Father with the first fruits of your life. “I am the true vine and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit… I am the vine; you are the branches apart from Me you can do nothing” (15:1–5).
9
Responding to the Father as the Fountain of Divine Love
Just as a vineyard owner plants his vines in order to receive a harvest, so the Father as the source of all (the Vinedresser) rightly receives the fruits that Jesus (the Vine) brings to our lives (the branches).
10
God the Son is the Mediator between the Father and man
As Mediator Jesus secures the grace and divine love for you. The 2nd Member of the Trinity is called Jesus, Christ, Lord, Master, Teacher, The Son, The Son of God, Son of Man, the Vine, and The way, and the truth, and the life.
11
God the Son is the Mediator between the Father and man
The titles for Jesus in the Upper Room Discourse points to His mediating role on our behalf. We don’t need saints, priests, or even, as blessed as she is, Mary. We need Jesus.
12
God the Son is the Mediator between the Father and man
The title “Son” is profound. The Son is the one authorized to speak for the Father, to carry out the Father’s affairs, to enforce the Father’s rule. The Son was responsible to implement the Father’s vision.
13
God the Son is the Mediator between the Father and man
“Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father… Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?’” John 14:8–10.
14
God the Son is the Mediator between the Father and man
“I will not leave you as orphans,” He said, “I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me he who loves Me I will love him and manifest Myself to him” John 14:18–21.
15
God the Son is the Mediator between the Father and man
“Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?’ Jesus answered him, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him’” (14:22–23).
16
Responding to the Son as Mediator between the Father and man
Look to the Son to bring you into favor with God. Do not look to your work, performance; look to Christ’s work and performance to make you right with the Father.
17
Responding to the Son as Mediator between the Father and man
Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Me” John 14:6.
18
Responding to the Son as Mediator between the Father and man
Worship Christ by joining yourselves with other believers in a local church. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34–35; cf. 13:13–17; 15:12).
19
Responding to the Son as Mediator between the Father and man
Pray in the Name of Christ. Praying in the Name of Jesus, is to recognize that He lived the life you couldn’t live, died the death, in your place, that you deserved to die for your rebellion against God, and rose from the grave and is seated at the right hand of the Father. It means you trust in Jesus to bring you into the fountain of divine love.
20
Responding to the Son as Mediator between the Father and man
Use the Bible as your standard for your faith and life. “certain people have crept in unnoticed” into the church promoting new teachings by “relying on their dreams” and their own understanding of what God wants (Jude 4, 8, 10).
21
God the Spirit Administers God’s Presence and Power in your Life
“I (Jesus) will ask the Father, and He (Father) will give you another (same as Me) Helper (Spirit), that He (Spirit) may be with you forever.”
22
God the Spirit Administers God’s Presence and Power in your Life
Helper (Parakletos) is often translated comforter but the title points to power & strength. Jesus was saying that He will send you the One who will come with strength and power.
23
Responding to the Spirit’s Presence and Power in your Life
Look to the Spirit to instruct your decision through the Word of God.
24
Responding to the Spirit’s Presence and Power in your Life
The Spirit applies the words and work of Jesus, but He is not the mediator of new words from the Father.
25
Responding to the Spirit’s Presence and Power in your Life
Jesus said, “He (Spirit) will glorify Me (Jesus), for He (Spirit) will take what is Mine (Jesus) and declare it to you (John 16:14). These are not new words, new teachings, or promptings. This is the Word of God.
26
Responding to the Spirit’s Presence and Power in your Life
Look to the Spirit to empower you as an ambassador and witness for Christ.
27
Responding to the Spirit’s Presence and Power in your Life
This does not mean witnessing will be easy but you can rest in the Spirit’s work in salvation. “as many as [are] appointed to eternal life [will] believe” (Acts 13:48). The Spirit authorizes you to be an evangelist and He empowers your witness.
28
