16 Highlighted Features: Resiliency & Redundancy
When network availability is critical to the application Spanning Tree Protocol (STP/RSTP) <1sec recovery time Resilient Ethernet Protocol (REP) Ring Topology <70ms recovery time Flex Links – Redundant Star Topology <60msec recovery time EtherChannel - Redundant Star Topology Port link aggregation - load sharing & redundancy <100msec recovery time Recover times listed are tested and validated results. The right technology to meet your needs

17 Spanning Tree Protocol Redundant Star Switch-level Topology
Only IEEE standard protocol for network resiliency - IEEE 802.1D Provides: Loop-free network Redundancy in case of failure Ring and Redundant Star Topology Operates in a plug-and-play fashion Spanning Tree Protocol is a link layer network protocol that ensures a loop-free topology for any bridged LAN. Spanning tree allows a network design to include spare (redundant) links to provide automatic backup paths if an active link fails, without the danger of bridge loops, or the need for manual enabling/disabling of these backup links. Bridge loops must be avoided because they result in flooding the network. Spanning Tree protocol is a layer 2 algorithm adopted into IEEE 802.1D. Convergence time is typically 30 to 50 seconds. Rapid Spanning Tree (RSTP) evolved from STP and provides quicker convergence time if a connection is broken – typically 1-2 seconds. This protocol provides the following: Loop-free network Provides redundancy in case of failure Operates in a plug-and-play fashion 17 17

18 Resilient Ethernet Protocol (REP) Redundant Star Switch-level Topology
Cisco Technology Support for flexible topologies - ring, ring segments and nested ring segments Only ring resiliency protocol applicable to both Industrial and IT applications Provides single break resiliency Less than 70ms reconnection time (with fiber) Will not drop an I/O connection Switch level rings are growing in popularity as they provide a level of resiliency at a reasonable price. Resilient Ethernet Protocol (REP) – is a highly resilient ring protocol between switches. This protocol is supported on the Stratix 8000 and other selective Cisco switches. These include: 3750 metro switches, ME 3400 series, Catalyst 4500 switches and 7600 routers. REP is very flexible and can support full ring, ring segment and nested ring segment topologies. For Logix customers who are looking for high performance resiliency REP provides a reconnection time of less than 70ms (when using fiber). This insures an I/O connection is not dropped. Some packets will be lost depending on the RPI but the connection will not be lost. For copper application the reconnection time is less than 750 ms.

19 Flex Links Redundant Star Switch-level Topology
Cisco Technology Redundant Star Topology Active/Standby Port Scheme Provides alternate path in case of failures, avoiding loops No bandwidth aggregation Applied to the Stratix 8000/5700 Access Switch and Stratix 8300 Routed Access Switch Recommend using equal speed ports Provides fast fail over for multicast traffic EtherChannel is a port aggregation technology. The term EtherChannel is specific used by Cisco. This feature allows grouping several physical Ethernet links to create one logical Ethernet link for the purpose of providing fault-tolerance and high-speed links between switches, routers and servers. An EtherChannel can be created from between two and eight active Fast Ethernet, or Gigabit Ethernet ports. Fault-tolerance is a key aspect of EtherChannel. Should a link fail, the EtherChannel technology will automatically redistribute traffic across the remaining links. This automatic recovery takes less than one second and is transparent to network applications and the end user. This makes it very resilient. STP can be used with an EtherChannel. STP treats all the links as a single connection. Without the use of an EtherChannel, STP would effectively shutdown any redundant links between switches until one connection goes down. This is where an EtherChannel is most desirable, it allows full use of all available links between two devices.

20 EtherChannel Redundant Star Switch-level Topology
Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) port aggregation – IEEE 802.3ad Redundant Star Topology A way of combining several physical links between switches into one logical connection to aggregate bandwidth via load balancing (2 to 8 ports) Provides resiliency between connected switches if a connection is broken EtherChannel is a port aggregation technology.
