https://portal.futuregrid.org 2011 International Conference on Cloud and Green Computing (CGC2011, SCA2011, DASC2011, PICom2011, EmbeddedCom2011) University of Technology Sydney, Australia December 13 2011 Geoffrey Fox gcf@indiana.edu http://www.infomall.org http://www.salsahpc.orghttp://www.infomall.orghttp://www.salsahpc.org Director, Digital Science Center Pervasive Technology Institute Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies School of Informatics and Computing Indiana University Bloomington Work with Judy Qiu and several students

https://portal.futuregrid.org Panel Topics 1. Cloud standards and interoperability. Since 2007 when Cloud Computing was proposed, a large number of prototypes, demos and cloud products have been provided such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, Google AppEngine and CA Cloud 360 from CA Technologies. Gradually, interoperability has come to the picture demanding intensive attention and solutions. This topic will discuss this challenge and what enterprise should do when selected a suitable cloud product. 2. Security and privacy in Cloud Computing. Security and privacy have become one of most concerned issues in cloud computing. Security and privacy protection from client, intermediate to server side is important. At client side, users need to protect their sensitive information because open cloud environment may be accommodating various malicious service providers or interceptors who intend to collect client sensitive information. In the middle, intermediate data security and privacy need to be protected as privacy and security are open to interceptors. At the server side, users' data must be assured just like in traditional environment. This topic will focus on this challenge. 3. Social media on Cloud - Social Cloud Computing Social networks and media have become a part of many peoples' lives such as Facebook and Twitter. Social networks provide a platform to facilitate communication and sharing between users by modeling real world relationships. Cloud computing can play as an enabling platform in support of various social medias. The challenges will be what new services should be provided by cloud computing and what is living cloud. Can Cloud Computing research be deeply connected with Social media and modeling?

https://portal.futuregrid.org Cloud Standards and Interoperability Substantial Europe and US Government Interest Currently less interest from (large) providers Currently Amazon is a de facto standard with CDMI and OCCI as storage/compute infrastructure(IaaS) standards Cloud components include – Client; Compute; Storage; Platform, Applications (Software-aaS) For “real computers” application providers port the “platform” to infrastructure; currently platform associated with infrastructure provider Maybe early to decide where standards needed Academic systems largely address IaaS and (unnecessarily) couple Client; Compute; Storage – Decouple these – e.g. Eucatools becomes general client and OpenStack Swift a general object store 3

https://portal.futuregrid.org Security and Privacy in Cloud Computing Clouds get much of cost effectiveness from shared facility with corresponding privacy issues although clearly can separate users to some extent at cost to elasticity Looking at existing cloud storage models – HDFS cannot be deployed in multiuser mode so hard to build system – Swift object store (OpenStack) can be deployed In health area beautiful anonymization and hybrid algorithms (small privacy sensitive and large insensitive) but difficult trust and policy issues – Can we explain to lawyers; it’s a policy/trust not technical issue – Genomics and personal medicine critical challenges Probably commercial clouds run more professionally than many “private installations” and less “human error” Many corporations seem to be using in spite of security/privacy concerns 4

https://portal.futuregrid.org Social Media on Cloud - Social Cloud Computing Important to use Cloud and Web 2.0 for electronic support of education as the “net generation” will expect – Clouds support pervasive participatory learning at any time and any place with smartphone/tablet interfaces – Simulations on demand, virtual worlds, access to all information Thin client support natural pleasingly parallel Cloud application Clouds can obviously provide much of information retrieval style computing needed at backend of Network and Web science apps analyzing blogs, twitter for sentiment etc. – and will use (Iterative) MapReduce 5
