Chronic risk factors include a past history of suicide attempts (both an acute and a chronic risk), a history of impulsive behavior, a family history of depression or suicide attempts or completed suicide, living alone, being widowed or divorced, and being white, male, or elderly.
Access to lethal agents is both an acute and a chronic risk factor.

Studies indicates independent inheritance of mood disorders and suicidal behavior.
Other studies has shown a concordance for suicide of 13.2 percent for monozygotic twins but only .7 percent for dizygotic twins.
