3  What is child abuse?  How has child abuse affected you?  What has been helpful in overcoming it?

5  40 Survey’s in total  53% Female  48% Male  Of those surveyed, average age was 18.  Surveyed in Ygnacio Valley High School, family members, friends, and BART.

8  Who abused you?  55%- Father  47%- Mother  What was the reason?  65%- Anger  50%-Previous Abuse  35%-Stress

9  Father son abuse Father son abuse  This shows some very graphic scenes of verbal and physical child abuse.  We’ll show about 3 minutes of the video. If you feel uncomfortable, you may step outside until the video is over.  The father was arrested and did go to jail.

10  When did it start? Between 6-7  When did it end? Between 8-12  What type of abuse was it?  79%- Physical  41%- Verbally  23%- Sexually  On a scale of 1-10, how much did this affect your life?  62% voted 9 or 10

11  People who feel helpless believe talking does not help  There is a need to focus on people who feel helpless

12  People who isolate themselves believe it greatly changed their lives  There is a need to help people who isolate themselves

13  There’s a relationship between how much it affected their life and the age at which it stopped  There is a need to stop child abuse before the age of 12

14  There is a relationship between the severity of the abuse and advocacy

15  People who talked to 2 or more people believe that therapy helps  There is a need for therapists to help people who do don’t have anyone to talk to 0 10

17  Some parents don’t know how to deal with their anger issues.  For example  65% said anger was the cause of Child Abuse

18  If they don’t feel comfortable they wont open up about the issue.  Those who were abused talked to people and rated that therapy helped.  Those who didn’t talk to people therapy didn’t help as much

19  Not many parents know how to raise children.  They don’t know the difference between discipline and child abuse.  They don’t know any other way of raising a child.

21  Strategy 1: Work with parents/guardians who have anger issues c  Offer free food to attend PTA meetings  In these meetings teach how to let out anger in a non-violent way.  Teach techniques on how to control anger before it gets more serious

22  Strategy 2: Have a retreat that focuses on child abuse intervention strategies for councilors/therapists in schools.  Volunteers to tell their story with child abuse  Bring in recent research on child abuse interventions  Volunteers with facilitation experience

23  Strategy 3: Hold monthly meetings on how to discipline and raise children.  In the monthly meetings, teach parents/guardians how to discipline their children without physically hurting them.  Have volunteers visit teen pregnancy facilities and give the young future mom’s and dad’s knowledge on raising their child.

27  Child Abuse is something that needs to be a priority  Anger is a main factor behind child abuse  We discovered parent needs for anger management and better parenting skills  Those abused need more people to talk to  Our chosen strategy is to have PTA meetings that focus on how to manage anger
