The Problem As an academician, you occasionally encounter references to the published literature in the form of a Uniform Resource Location (URL) – a “web link.” Bibliography Does CT colonography have a role for population-based colorectal cancer screening? de Haan MC, Halligan S, Stoker J. Eur Radiol. 2012 May 2. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22549102 CAD-associated Reader Error in CT Colonography. Koshkin VS, Hinshaw JL, Wroblewski K, Dachman AH. Acad Radiol. 2012 Apr 24. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22537502 Why does my doctor insist I undergo a standard colonoscopy when a virtual colonoscopy sounds easier? [No authors listed] Johns Hopkins Med Lett Health After 50. 2012 Mar;24(1):7. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22493824 Bibliography Does CT colonography have a role for population-based colorectal cancer screening? de Haan MC, Halligan S, Stoker J. 3 The Problem You will see them in e-mail alerts from our favorite search services.

The Problem You will see them directly in digital publications related to our research.

The Problem You might even see them when your colleagues share information with you.

The Problem As you encounter these URL-base references, you may want to click on the link in order to view the resource.

The Problem Frequently, following these public links will not permit you to view the full resource. Because you are not approaching the resource through our USU Electronic Resources (ER) library portal, the publisher of the resource does not recognize you as a legitimate member of the USU community with the right to access those subscribed resources.

The Solution To remedy the situation, the LRC now offers a conversion tool to “rewrite” your link so that you can quickly validate your right to access the material. We call this tool Convert Public Link.

The Solution Using the tool is very simple. First, identify a link to a journal article that requires a subscription or payment.

The Solution Next, highlight and copy the entire link.

The Solution Open the Convert Public Link Tool in a new browser window. Visit USU ER and log in either with your CAC card or with your user ID and password. After you log-in, select Convert Public Link from the Library Services menu. (We recommend that you bookmark this link in your browser for easy access, thereafter.)

The Solution Paste the link into the field on the Convert Public Link form. Click the Submit button.

The Solution A new link is returned to you that now includes the ER’s gateway information. Now simply click on the link. If the article is included with one of our subscription agreements, then it will appear in a new browser window.

The Solution The Convert Public Link tool takes your submitted link and moves it into the ER system so that the publisher recognizes that you are from USU (or an affiliate). Let’s look at a few examples... Publisher Web Site Public Users ER Users Public Link Converted Link

Example: Chronicle of Higher Education You have registered with the Chronicle of Higher Education to send you a digital newsletter highlighting your topic interests in higher education. You notice a link to an article that interests you.

Example: Chronicle of Higher Education You click on this “public” link – only to discover that the article is deemed “premium content.” It displays only a “teaser” of information and the opportunity to subscribe to the publication. You know that USUHS subscribes to the Chronicle. Why didn’t the link work?

Example: Chronicle of Higher Education Like many online publishers including the Chronicle of Higher Education, e-mail communications in general are issued without regard for how subscribers authenticate themselves to gain access. While clicking on the link may work if you have a personal subscription to the Chronicle of Higher Education, it will not work with the LRC’s subscription since the link must be altered to authenticate through our gateway to the article. Public Link http://chronicle.com/article/Europes-Austerity- Measures/131739/?sid=wb&utm_source=wb&utm_medium=en LRC Authenticated Link http://chronicle.com.lrc1.usuhs.edu/article/Europes-Austerity- Measures/131739/?sid=wb&utm_source=wb&utm_medium=en

Example: Chronicle of Higher Education Since linked materials are usually published in “public context,” and the link will not work directly with the LRC’s subscription, use the Convert Public Link tool to convert the link in order to authenticate your access to the article properly.

Example: Chronicle of Higher Education Copy the URL from the location bar of your browser.

Example: Chronicle of Higher Education Open the Convert Public Link tool. If you have created a bookmark, select the bookmark, authenticate to USU ER, and the Convert Public Link tool will appear. Else, go to USU ER and authenticate with your CAC card or log in with your USU ER user ID and password, then select Convert Public Link from the Library Services menu.

Example: Chronicle of Higher Education Paste the URL into the form field provided. Click the Submit button.

Example: Chronicle of Higher Education The link has now been converted to work with the LRC’s subscription. Click on the resulting converted link. The targeted resource will appear in a new window. Now let’s look at another example...

Example: PubMed Alert Service While checking your work e-mail at home, you discover the latest MyNCBI Alert. A quick scan of the weekly search reveals an article of interest to you. Knowing that these links are published in public context, you copy the URL from the alert to your clipboard. You run the Convert Public Link tool from your bookmarks. Since you are working at home without the benefit of a CAC, you log in with your ER user ID and password.

Example: PubMed Alert Service Paste the MyNCBI link into the form. Click Submit.

Example: PubMed Alert Service Click the resulting URL to follow the NCBI link to the citation.

Example: PubMed Alert Service On the citation page, click full text icon to discover the full-text options for this citation. Click one of the full text options.

Example: PubMed Alert Service Enjoy reading your article.

Report a Problem If you have a problem with this tool, you can click “Report a Problem with this Link.”

Report a Problem All the diagnostic information is collected for you. Add a comment and click the Report button.
