2 The word “apostle” refers to a small, inner group of Jesus’ followers.

3 Of the twelve apostles appointed by Christ, three were considered to belong to the inner circle: Simon Peter, James (the elder) and John (the beloved). The quiet workers were Andrew (the brother of Peter), Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew. The little known are James (the least), Jude, and Simon, the zealot. The traitor was Judas who hang himself. He betrayed Christ for thirty pieces of silver.
