2/10/2009 Today you will learn how to: –Write chemical formulas for binary ionic compounds. –Correctly name binary ionic compounds. When you are finished you will have a list of 35 binary ionic compounds.

Writing formulas and naming binary ionic compounds. You will need the following materials: A periodic table, please locate groups 1 and 7 (the alkali metals) and (the halogens) Your science notebook to record the notes from this presentation.

Atoms in the alkali metal group will form (+) ions, or cations, because they transfer an electron and will have a charge of +1 List the symbols for the cations formed by this group in your notebook. I have done the first one, you do the rest. H =H + Li =__ Na =__ K =__ Rb =__ Cs =__ Fr =__

Great you did it! Now you have the symbols of the group one cations. H =H + Li =Li + Na =Na + K =K + Rb =Rb + Cs =Cs + Fr =Fr +

Now write the names of the cations. List the names for the cations formed by this group in your notebook. I have done the first one, you do the rest. H =H + Hydrogen ion Li =Li + Na =Na + K =K + Rb =Rb + Cs =Cs + Fr =Fr +

Great you did it! Now you have a list of the symbols and names of the group one cations. H =H + Hydrogen ion Li =Li + Lithium ion Na =Na + Sodium ion K =K + Potassium ion Rb =Rb + Rubidium ion Cs =Cs + Cesium ion Fr =Fr + Francium ion

Atoms in the halogen group will form (-) ions, or anions, because they receive an electron and will have a charge of -1 List the symbols for the anions formed by this group in your notebook. I have done the first one, you do the rest. F =F - Cl =__ Br =__ I =__ At =__

Great you did it! Now you have the symbols for the Halogen anions. F =F - Cl =Cl - Br =Br - I =I - At = At -

Now write the names of the anions. To write the names of the anions in this group use the prefix of the element name then add the suffix -ide. I have done the first and last one, now you do the rest. F =F - Flouride ion Cl =Cl - Br =Br - I =I - At = At - Astatide ion

Great you did it! Now you have the symbols and names for the Halogen anions. F =F - Flouride ion Cl =Cl - Cloride ion Br =Br - Bromide ion I =I - Iodide ion At = At - Astatide ion

Next it’s time to put the symbols together to make formulas for the binary ionic compounds formed between the alkali metals and the halogens. After you have a list of the formulas (35 total) write the proper name for each one of them.

H+ Li+ Na+ K+ Rb+ Cs+ Fr+ F - Cl - Br - I - At - Write the cation (+) first and the anion (-) second. Here are the formulas and proper names for the Hydrogen compounds: HFHydrogen Flouride HClHydrogen Chloride HBrHydrogen Bromide HIHydrogen Iodide HAtHydrogen Astitide Now complete the list for the Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, and Fr compounds. Keep them in columns as shown above.

2/10/2009 Yea! Today you have learned how to: –Write chemical formulas for binary ionic compounds. –Correctly name binary ionic compounds. And have written a list of 35 binary ionic compounds.
