Powertrains Carsen Banister Objective: To explain the application of differentials within various powertrains Front Wheel Drive Rear Wheel Drive All Wheel Drive Hummer H3 Sources:www.movinggraphics.cawww.howstuffworks.com
2
Rear Wheel Drive Two types: solid rear axle, independent rear suspension Differential separate from transmission; contained in rear-axle Driveshaft connects transmission with rear axle Front Wheel Drive Differential is contained within the transaxle Uses half-shafts, each with two CV-joints Allows wheels to move, relative to differential
3
All Wheel Drive Requires three differentials: Front, Centre, Rear Front and Rear wheels can have different average speeds Provides higher control since torque is applied to all wheels Hummer H3 Geared hubs allow 16” ground clearance Can climb 16” vertical steps with stock wheels Can go through 16” water at 20mph, 24” water at 5mph
