3. THE CHALLENGE FOR CUMBRIA! To increase participation in sport and physical activity from 33% of the NW population active in 2003 to 50% in 2020 Widen access and reduce inequality in participation The population of Cumbria is around 488,500 (source: Cumbria County Council population figures) Based on 33% of Cumbria’s population 161,200 are currently active By 2020 another 83,050 need to be active That means a yearly increase of 4,880 A weekly increase of 94 16 new participants per Local Authority area each week until 2020
