2. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in a period of great discovery and exploration.

3. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS A lot of the world still hadn’t been discovered and in 1492 he sailed from Europe to try to find a sailing route to the East Indies in a ship called the ‘Santa Maria’.

4. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS However, instead he reached the islands off the coast of modern America, which we now call the ‘Bahamas’.

5. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Columbus was known for many years as the man who discovered America, but we now know that the Vikings and Native American Indians were there hundreds of years before!

6. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Despite this, he is still considered to be a great explorer who led the way in similar discoveries all around the world.

8. INTERESTING FACTS  At first, Columbus had no money to explore or buy a ship but he stuck to his dreams and raised the money himself.  America still has a public holiday called ‘Columbus day’.

9. NEIL ARMSTRONG Neil Armstrong was born on the 5 th August 1930 at a time when the world was between two world wars.

10. NEIL ARMSTRONG When his father took him to an air show as a young boy he decided he wanted to be a pilot.

11. NEIL ARMSTRONG When he was old enough he joined the Navy and became a fighter pilot, then a test pilot, which is a very dangerous job testing new aeroplanes.

12. NEIL ARMSTRONG In the 1950s, he became inspired by space exploration and succeeded in becoming an astronaut for NASA.

13. NEIL ARMSTRONG Several years later after a lot of hard work he became the first man to set foot on the moon with the famous words ‘that’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind’.

14. He was the first human being to walk on the moon! SUMMARY: SO WHY WAS NEIL ARMSTRONG FAMOUS?

15. INTERESTING FACTS  The only picture of Armstrong actually on the moon is a reflection in his partner Buzz Aldrin’s gold glass helmet!  Nobody knew whether the moon was hard enough to stand on until Armstrong walked on it!
