3 Day 1 sperm and ovum unite Day 7- 10 Zygote attaches to the lining of the uterus (implantation) The placenta begins to form. 2 wks A woman will miss her menstrual period. 4 wks Embryo - eyes, ears, nose, spine, digestive tract and nervous system are present. tube for the future heart starts beating. 8 wks fetus has all the organs a full term baby will have. heart is functioning. Bones begin to form. 12 wks Fingernails and toe nails are forming. Immature kidneys secret urine into the bladder. External genitalia are forming. fetus can now move heartbeat may be heard using ultrasound equipment. 1 ST TRIMESTER (3 months)

4 2 ND TRIMESTER (4-6months) 16 wks 16cm 110g face looks more human hears mother’s voice baby’s movements felt. 17 wks begins to store some antibodies 20 wks 25 cm 300g By the end of the fifth month the baby is about half the length of a newborn. 24 wks Early breathing movements begin. 26 wks 30 cm 600g baby’s outline may be felt through the abdomen. eyes may be open

6 3 RD TRIMESTER (7-9 months) 28 weeks 35-37 cm 1110 g baby can hear and respond to sounds. 32 weeks 40-42 cm 1800-2100g baby develops a sense of taste becomes aware of sounds outside the mother’s body. pupils in the baby’s eyes can react to light. 36 weeks 45-47 cm 2000-2900g baby continues to store of antibodies resist some diseases. 40 weeks 45-55cm 3200g baby is now full term!
