Greening the Greenhouse Integrated Greenhouse Project EC LIFE05 ENV/UK/998 Greening the Greenhouse June 2007

Mission Exploring the links between rainforests, people and nature through education, conservation and sustainable living

The Rainforest is a Metaphor Destructive human activities and ways of life are destroying fragile ecosystems Society needs to improve energy use building practices economic practices

6 Themes to Bring Sustainability Alive Helping people to explore global & local connections

Walking the Talk?  Old, dilapidated glasshouses at end of useful lives  Wasting energy  Difficult to promote sustainability when not practicing it  Definitely not ‘walking the talk’

The Journey So Far 1993 ‘Wyld Court Rainforest’ visitor centre opened 2000Rainforest charity established (took over from World Land Trust) 2003 SEEDA provided funding to prepare EC funding bid 2004 Millennium Commission grant awarded to fund Integrated Greenhouse Project, Phase 1 (Human Impacts Building) 2005 EC LIFE grant awarded to fund Integrated Greenhouse Project, Phase 2 (Green Greenhouse) 2006 Human Impact Building opened 2007 Trust for Sustainable Living to launch 2008Green Greenhouse scheduled to open

Integrated Greenhouse Project – LIFE ENV/UK/000998 Total project value € 4.487 million Grant value € 2.243 million (50%) Jan 05 - Dec 08 Purpose: To demonstrate sustainable greenhouse design, integrated with other buildings (emphasis on energy)

Project Partners Financial Supporters LIFE instrument of the European Community Millennium Commission / National Lottery DTI SEEDA Vodafone UK Foundation Greenham Common Trust Partners Pilkington Glass Tourism South East TV Energy Wageningen University (NL)

Integrated Greenhouse Project - Phase I

Our heating journey from fossil fuel to biofuel The first public indoor garden / zoo to convert to biomass heating

Wood-chip Heating CO2 emissions per unit of energy supplied 0 50 100 150 200 250 300 350 400 450 Grams of CO2 per kWh Woodfuelled heat Wind power Solar PV m-si Solar PV p-Si Natural gas heating Light fuel oil heating

A place to explore and connect Sustainable timber and recycled materials Passive ventilation and solar design PV cells to help power the building ‘Human Impact’ film & signs to introduce issues Human Impact Building (Prototype I)

Integrated Greenhouse Project - Phase II

Designing the ‘Green Greenhouse’ (Prototype II) 50% cut in heat loss seasonal underground heat storage (‘thermal buffering’) recycled materials low embodied energy renewable energy sources wherever possible modular construction rainwater harvesting new spaces for education and community use, animal and plant care and office support

Prototype II The Green Greenhouse ‘Closed’ greenhouse design – storing excess summer heat for winter re-use across our site. This is of major interest to commercial growers in Europe. Final design options are currently being evaluated Construction due to begin end 2007 £5 million budget (only £0.5 million still to be raised)

Trust for Sustainable Livin g

Promoting understanding and dialogue  Events  Learning from other cultures  Redefining ‘successful living’ A MEETING OF MINDS Science and Indigenous Knowledge in the Colombian Amazon – Converging Perspectives 22 June 2007

Trust for Sustainable Livin g Putting ideas into action  On-site education, exhibits and displays  Best practice – what works, what doesn’t?  Expert advice and feedback

Trust for Sustainable Livin g Support services for organisations and individuals wanting to ‘go sustainable’  Defining visions and pathways  Analysing options  Research, advice and consultancy e.g. future planning, sourcing funds  Limited capacity at present but want to assist wherever possible
