5 Faculty of Computing & Engineering Innovation Support On Your Doorstep Faculty of Computing & Engineering comprises of five Schools: Computing and Information Engineering; Computing and Intelligent Systems; Computing and Mathematics; Engineering; Research Graduate School.

Approximately 3000 students Over 200 staff Extensive specialist facilities on the Coleraine, Jordanstown and Magee campuses of the University of Ulster.

7 Faculty of Computing & Engineering Innovation Support On Your Doorstep Education & Training Offer a range of courses devised in partnership with industry, commerce and the public sector to educate and train a new generation of IT & engineering professionals. These innovative courses are offered through its undergraduate, postgraduate and lifelong learning provision, as well as through its significant portfolio of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses Awareness of professional issues and entrepreneurship is embedded into our undergraduate courses and these also have a compulsory period of industrial placement (minimum of 10 months). This provides our students with an additional edge, which is acknowledged and welcomed by the employers of our graduates. Strong encouragement for final year students to do their project on placement company project – company retains any IP. Given that a large number of staff are involved in research & technology and knowledge transfer activities, ensures that the content of our courses remain at the leading edge of technical development and directly relevant to the needs of the industry. Industrial Liaison panel for both Computing & Engineering subject areas with both FDI companies and indigenous SMEs as members e.g. CITI, Liberty IT, AllState

8 Faculty of Computing & Engineering Innovation Support On Your Doorstep Education & Training Close collaboration with industry has resulted in innovative multidisciplinary Courses such as BSc. (Hons.) Interactive Multimedia Design, M.Sc. Digital Media Communication, and M.Sc. Health Informatics as well as courses and research collaborations with the Financial Services Sector such as the Capital Markets Initiative. Facilitated by Invest NI, this initiative has brought five key players in capital markets together with the local universities to boost research capability and skills across the sector. MSc Professional Software Development - a conversion course for non-IT graduates - will have TWO intakes this year of over 100 students. New B.Eng. Renewable Energy Engineering course MSc in Advanced Composites and Polymers - endorsed by Bombardier as supporting the local aeronautical engineering industry. Earn As You Learn with Kainos

10 Faculty of Computing & Engineering Innovation Support On Your Doorstep New student entrepreneurship initiative funded by Invest NI. Ulster utilises Stanford and MIT proven models. Open to all but strategically targeting 2 nd year students with aim of them spinning out their own company rather than doing placement in 3 rd year. Residential Bootcamps with internal and external mentors and and Pitch Fests with potential investors.

11 Faculty of Computing & Engineering Innovation Support On Your Doorstep Research Excellence Just into new REF Assessment with submission December 2013 - results released in 2014 RAE 2008 in UK Top 20 for both Computing & Engineering –Computer Science at Ulster has been ranked 15th out of a list of 81 UK universities in terms of research power. –Our submission of 41 staff was the 8th largest in the UK, with 55% of the submission judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent, and 90% internationally recognized. –Computer Science is a highly competitive discipline - the 3rd largest unit of assessment in the UK, involving all of the leading universities. –Also the Materials Research Unit of Assessment based within the Faculty jumped from 17th to 11th in the UK national league table for research excellence and in its research submission the Assessment Panel found strong evidence of world class research, supported by internationally leading research. In fact 95% of the staff are judged to be of international standing.

13 Faculty of Computing & Engineering Innovation Support On Your Doorstep Exploitation & Commercialisation of Research Faculty has been extremely effective in the commercialisation of its research. Has a number of patents and invention disclosures each year. Patent portfolio includes patents with NASA. Has licensed a large percentage of its technologies to external organisations. Been at the forefront of business incubation within the University and has spun out a number of successful companies in the last few years. Faculty has generated on average over 45 % of total annual University Consultancy Income over last decade. Faculty is always open to discussion with organisations as to the exploitation of its research to the mutual benefit of the parties involved.
