7 The Cathars You will be: Looking at a religious group persecuted by the Catholic Church known as the Cathars You will be able to: Explain what is meant by heresy and describe the action taken by the Christian church against heretics Give two examples of how religion has created conflict

8 The Jewish Holocaust You will be looking at: The attempts of the Nazis to wipe out the Jews in Europe during WW2 You will be able to: Explain the meaning of Holocaust and what it refers to Describe how the rise of anti Semitism in Germany affected the Jews Explain how the Jews felt at this time

9 Nazi Propaganda We will be: Looking at how the Nazis used propaganda to influence the attitudes of non Jews Discussing the effects of propaganda on the Jews You will be able to: Explain what is meant by propaganda Explain how Nazi propaganda influenced the people of Germany Explain how Jews were depicted by propaganda

12 Death Camps We will be: Looking at the experiences of Jews sent to Auschwitz and the other purpose built death camps You will be able to: Describe what it was like for Jews who lived in the camps State how you think that this terrible brutality would affect a person’s belief in God Give some reasons as to why such evil exists

13 Death Marches You will be: Looking at the efforts of the Nazis to continue with their plan of extermination as the war was coming to an end You will be able: Explain what the death marchers were Explain what the Nazis wanted to achieve with the death marches Explain how the Jews would have felt

14 Liberation (1945) We will be: Looking at what the allies found when they liberated the camps in 1945 and the attempts of the Nazis to hide the atrocities You will be able to: Describe the scene that the allies were met with when they entered the camps Explain how local people were exposed to the horrors of the camps and the role they were given Explain who would have had feelings of guilt

15 The Aftermath We will be: Looking at the formation of the state of Israel and the conflict that has arisen from this You will be able to: Explain why and when the state of Israel was formed Explain attitudes of Arabs and Jews to the state of Israel Explain what Yad Vashem is and its role in keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive
