Evolution of TISP in Central Indiana Section Brad Snodgrass Pre-University Education Activities Central Indiana Section

Great Beginnings Region 4 Seminar in June, 2006 –Initiated the TISP Program in CIS. Brownsburg Challenger Center –Met Lead Teacher at R4 Seminar –First presentation in June of 2006 Pike Township Schools –In-Service Programs for Math and Science Academy (April 2007) –After school program (February 2008) Warren Township Seminar (June 2007) 5/2/20152

Staffing the TISP Program has always had great EXCOMM Support. Need a champion for every school system –Huge time commitment means smaller volunteer pool –We were unsuccessful tapping retired members –CIS Academic members are very active in the section, but most have programs through their institution. –We have always been able to get volunteers to support established activities, but few to champion a program with a school system 5/2/20153

Institutionalizing the Lessons aka Metrics aka Are the Teachers Using the Lessons? Difficult to get feedback from teachers –We saw some teachers in successive years –Got some feedback that lesson materials were difficult to procure (Not much money in budget for these materials) Our Primary Objective is the Least Measurable 5/2/20154

Indiana Changes the Rules 2007/2008 change to school calendar –Changed definition of a classroom day –District-wide In-Service days were eliminated –Force TISP to evenings or weekends Challenger Center –Their full day teacher training days were eliminated –Last supported TISP was September, 2009 Pike Township –last TISP was January 2010 –Lost our champion. (when his child changed schools) 5/2/20155

If you Build it, they will come Establish a seminar site. Invite Teachers, Volunteers and new Champions –Grow new champions –Develop “teacher champions” Warren Township hosted a 2 day Seminar –Trained champions on Friday night –New champions presented to teachers on Saturday –Poorly attended – hard to market –Champions did not continue in the program. 5/2/20156

Teacher Grants Minimize staffing - No champions needed Develop a marketing channel Focus the funding on the classroom –Lessons are teacher presented –Feedback from the classroom is built-in –CIS funds the lesson We still grow “Teacher Champions” –Look for opportunities for a traditional program via grant recipients 5/2/20157

Build the Brand Feedback from Teacher Grants is used in Section Literature –Keeps an awareness of the program –Builds the Brand –Cost to the section is under $500 per year CIS K12 Outreach Mailing List (supported through IEEE mail list feature) –Raise awareness of Grants, PEC Grants, etc. FIRST Essay Contest –Connect outreach to FIRST Robotics. –Further establish CIS Outreach Brand 5/2/20158
