1 Book Auditions Here! How to audition a book or How do I find a book I will like?

2 There is nothing sadder than an abandoned book You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it or clothe s without checking the siz e. Don’t pick out a book without “auditioning” it!

3 Judge A Book By It’s Cover! While it should never be the only measure of a book, it’s a good place to start. Fact: Authors have almost no say in what the covers of their books look like.

4 … And it was just right!  Picking a book at the right reading level for you is important.  The book shouldn’t be too hard or too easy. Can you find and understand: AR level? Lexile Level? STAR Score? Or the FFM (five-finger method)

5 Blurb It! Read the back of the book or inside cover. Look for what it’s about. Read the review quotes. Are they from authors you like?

6 Test Drive It!  Read a page or two. Do you like the writing style? Does the intro hook you? o Some electronic formats allow you to read a sample chapter before you buy.

7 Go For Two Out of Three!  Is there a series you like? Have you read them all?

9 BFFs (Best Book Friends)  What are your friends reading?  Do you share your reads with your friends?

10 Trust a Professional!  Ask Ms. Nicholson, Ms. Cota or your reading teacher for suggestions.

12 So Where Do I Find Them?  Media Center -Be sure your fines are paid. They will never be accepted as an excuse for not having a book.  The Library - Your local library is close by and has books, movies, audio books and computers for patrons to use. They also have ebooks available for checkout.  Book Stores  Online vendors - If you have an ereader, Amazon.com and other e vendors often have free books or samples as well as other books.
