Moisture Barrier:
In between the keratinocytes (skin cells) in the stratum corneum (outer layer of the epidermis) are epidermal lipids (ceramides, fatty acids, and lipids) that form a waterproof moisture barrier. This barrier minimizes transepidermal water loss and hinders the invasion of microorganisms, chemical irritants, and allergens.
