2. A Separate Piece  Characters: Finny, Gene, Leper, Brinker, Quackenbush Finny; Finny is the best friend of Gene, he is an amazing athlete and every one in school likes him. He is well known around the school and can get away with anything. Finny gets pushed out of a try and breaks his leg and he becomes unable to play sports from then on. Gene; Best friend of Finny, he is new to the school and Finny becomes his best friend and they do everything together. Gene becomes jealous of Finny and pushes him out of a tree, causing him to break his leg. Gene is overwhelmed with is guilt over the accident. Leper; Leper joins the army later on in the book, but goes through a meltdown and deserts. He comes back to the school and testifies in the case to find out who pushed Finny out of the tree. Brinker; Brinker is the leader of the Devin Boys. He convinces Gene to enlist to the army, and starts the court case to find Gene guilty of pushing Finny out of the tree. Quackenbush; Manager of the crew team. No one really likes him, he also has anger issues.

4. Setting  At the Devon School in New England. The book goes through a time span, going through the summer and winter. We see changes in the season indicating this. The story occurs in 1942 during World War II. The tree outside of the school is also a major place in the story. It’s the place where Gene and Finny first really bond, and also the place where their friendship take a turn for the worst, when Gene pushes Finny of the limb. Finny and Gene’s dorm, the hospital, and church are also major places in the story.
