Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” Make Observations of Plants and Animals to Compare Diversity of Life in Different Habitats Hello boys and girls, Before coming out to the Discovery Zone why not introduce yourself to some of the cool words we will be using. IVDZ 2-LS4-1 Make observations of plants/animals to compare diversity....

IVDZ ecosystem – a system of living and nonliving things that depend on each other to survive. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” Our desert ecosystem has cactus, lizards, and coyotes in it. 2-LS4-1 What nonliving things do you see that are part of the desert ecosystem? Rocks, clouds, air, soil

ecosystem – a system of living and nonliving things that depend on each other to survive. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” 2-LS4-1 What would happen in this ocean ecosystem if the fish died?

habitat – Place or environment where a living thing normally lives or occurs. The meerkats live in a dry habitat with their house underground. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ 2-ESS2-1 prepack HMMM….If meerkats live in the desert with little water, how do you think they get the water they NEED? from the food they eat

biodiversity – the variety of life that happens within an ecosystem or habitat. How many different types of living things there are in an ecosystem. The biodiversity of the rainforest is high since there are many types of living things there. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ 2-ESS2-1 prepack 2-LS4-1 What can you guess about why the biodiversity is high in a rainforest?

organisms – any living thing, plant or animal (fungus, bacteria, virus too) Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” All living things are called organisms. Turn to your neighbor and name 3 organisms. tiny microscopic enormous blue whale

population – the number of one type of living thing or organism in one area. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ The population of pine trees around Pine Valley is 9,329. 2-ESS2-1 prepack What is the population of elephants in the blue circle area? How about ladybugs? 2-LS4-1

Remember these things when you Come out to the Discovery Zone. We’ll see you soon! Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ 2-LS4-1 Make Observations of Plants and Animals to Compare Diversity of Life in Different Habitats
