2 1. atrophy (verb) a. To waste away; wither. b. To cause to wither. (noun) a. The emaciation of tissues, organs, or the entire body. b. Any wasting away. Ex: Yolanda underwent extensive physical therapy to exercise the leg that had atrophied while in a cast.

3 2. debilitate (verb) a. To make feeble; weaken. Related Word: debilitation Ex: Heavy blood loss during surgery debilitated Mr. Jones and impeded his recovery.

4 3. livid (adj) a. Discolored, as from a bruise; black and blue. b. Ashen or very pale, from anger. c. Extremely angry. Related Words: lividly; lividness. Ex: After falling off her bike, Nell’s shins were livid for a week.

5 4. moribund (adj) a. In a a condition approaching death or an end. Ex: The moribund pelican was revived by the veterinarian.

6 5. noxious (adj) a. Injurious or harmful to to health. b. Injurious or harmful to the mind or morals; corrupting. Related Words: noxiously, noxiousness. Ex: The chemical solvent should be used outside so that you are not overcome by the noxious fumes.

7 6. pestilent (adj) a. Tending to cause death; fatal. b. Likely to cause an epidemic disease. c. Infected or contaminated with infectious disease. Related Word: pestilence Ex: Vaccination has eradicated pestilent disease in most of the world.

8 7. prostrate (verb) a. To weaken or render helpless; overcome. b. To make one to bow or kneel down in humility or adoration. (adj) a. Physically or emotionally exhausted. b. Lying down full length. Ex: A tropical fever prostrated three members of the scientific expidition.

9 8. salubrious (adj) a. Favorable to health or well being. Related Words: salubriously; salubriousness. Ex: Moderate exercise has a salubrious effect.

10 9. scourge (noun) a. A cause of great suffering or harm. b. Any instrument, such as a whip, used for inflicting punishment, suffering or vengeance. (verb) a. To afflict severely; devastate. b. To punish severely. c. To beat, whip or flog. Ex: Cyclical attacks of plant- eating locusts were the scourge of the farmers.

11 10. unscathed (adj) a. unharmed; uninjured. Ex: The race car driver emerged from the burning vehicle miraculously unscathed.
