1 The life cycle of a butterfly.
Butterflies The life cycle of a butterfly.

2 Video of Butterfly Life Cycle

3 Stage One STAGE 1: EGG TO CATERPILLAR (or larve if you want to be fancy) An adult butterfly lays it’s egg on a leaf. Eggs hatch into caterpillars. The caterpillars eat all day for 2-4 weeks, and grow so quickly that they have to keep shedding their skin to give them enough space to keep growing!

4 Stage Two STAGE 2: CATERPILLAR TO PUPA
The caterpillar attaches itself to a twig. It sheds its skin. The outside of the caterpillar dries to form a hard outer covering called a chrysalis. Inside, the caterpillar pupates which is fancy for changing into a butterfly!

5 Stage Three STAGE 3: PUPA TO BUTTERFLY
The pupa (or chrysalis) becomes clear, or transparent for you “Fancy Kippsters”. A butterfly emerges with crumpled, wet wings. It pumps fluid into its wings to make them straight and lets them dry out. Then it goes in search of food!

6 Stage Four STAGE 4: BUTTERFLY LAYS EGGS
A female butterfly lays its eggs on the underside of a leaf. It chooses the underside so that the eggs will not be seen and are safe. It chooses a leaf that the larvae (tiny caterpillars) can start eating as soon as they hatch.

9 Teaching Purpose The purpose of this powerpoint slideshow was to teach my students about the lifecycle of a butterfly. The lesson ended up going really well as the different slides and types of media helped reach the different types of learners. I have included photographs of the process, diagrams and a video to demonstrate the lifecycle of a butterfly.
