2 Jesus is the True and Better… Luke 24:13-14,25-27 ESV  [13] That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, [14] and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.  [25] And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! [26] Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” [27] And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

3 Jesus is the true and better Adam Romans 5:18-19 ESV  [18] Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. [19] For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.

5 Jesus is the true and better Abel Genesis 4:8-10 ESV  [8] Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. [9] Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” [10] And the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground.

7 Jesus is the true and better Abel Hebrews 12:24 ESV  [24] and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

9 Jesus is the true and better Abraham Philippians 2:9-11 ESV  [9] Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, [10] so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

[7] And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” [8] Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.

15 Discussion Time (10 minutes)  How do you feel about the fact that God is revealing the Person of Jesus from the Old Testament?  How should our commitment to read and study the Old Testament change?

17 Jesus is the true and better Jacob Genesis 32:24-28 ESV  [24] And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. [25] When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. [26] Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” [27] And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” [28] Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

19 Jesus is the true and better Joseph Genesis 50:15-21 ESV  [15] When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” [16] So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died: [17] ‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

21 Jesus is the true and better Joseph Genesis 50:15-21 ESV  [18] His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” [19] But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? [20] As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. [21] So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

29 Discussion Time (10 minutes)  What do you think God is showing us by not only using the strengths and successes of these Old Testament saints but also their weakness and failures to point us to Jesus?  In what ways can you point people to Jesus with your weakness and failures?

[21] And he said, “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

39 Discussion Time (10 minutes)  What does it say about our sin problem that as great as these Old Testament “heroes” were, that we needed someone even greater to save us?  Which character in their pointing to Christ impacted you the most and why?
