No longer is the idea of containment limited to the U.S.S.R and China but it grew to include any area that could be under the threat of communism.

Korea is Divided After WWII Korea is divided at the 38 th parallel –North of the 38 th parallel was communist controlled politically by the Soviet Union –South of the 38 th parallel was democratic supported by the U.S.

Unification Both North and South Korea want to Unify Korea but on their own terms –North wants to make it a unified communist country –South wants to make it a unified democratic country

The War Invasion –June 25, 1950 North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to unify the countries –Were the Soviets behind this Truman believes that they are (He is wrong) Kim Il-Sung asked for the support of the Soviets but he never received it Truman petitions the UN for support –Soviet Union was protesting the UN because of China’s communist government not being allowed to participate in the UN –The UN votes unanimously to condemn the invasion and support South Korea

The War Summer of 1950 –MacArthur was able to push the North Koreans back behind the 38 th parallel –MacArthur convinces Truman to let him free all of Korea so he pushes towards China –Mao, the Chinese leader warned MacArthur to back off and when he didn’t China joined the war Winter of 1950 and 1951 –Chinese push the U.S. back across the 38 th parallel –The war then turns into a brutal stalemate

The Firing of MacArthur Chinese enter the war –Truman decides not to free the whole country –MacArthur disagrees –Truman was set on the idea of Limited War or keeping the fight confined to one area –MacArthur openly criticizes Truman’s policies –Truman Fires MacArthur for insubordination

The War’s End July 1951 –Both sides meet to talk about peace in Korea –Fighting still continues for another two years 1953 –Truce was signed between the two nations –Border was set at the cease fire line not far from the 38 th parallel

Writing Question Title: The Firing of MacArthur Was Truman right when he said “we are trying to prevent a world war-not start one” or do you think MacArthur is right when he said, “In war there is no substitute for victory”? Should Truman have let MacArthur use whatever means necessary or should Truman have fired MacArthur? Defend your answer. (3/4 of a page)
