13 Cape Neddick Lighthouse  Maine’s southernmost lighthouse.  Built on a rocky island just off shore.  Because of this, its nickname is “Nubble Light”  It is only accessible by boat although a previous lightkeeper used to transport his child to the mainland for school in a hanging basket! 16 Automated Because of this, there is no need for lightkeepers to live in or next to lighthouses anymore. Early lighthouses used candles as a source of light. Lighthouse keepers and their families were kept busy keeping the candles lit, cleaning and polishing the lenses and tower windows. Lighthouses that are automated have electricity powered lamps.

17 Focal Plane In order for the lighthouse light to be seen for long distances, lighthouses are built on cliffs or hills. The focal point is the light from the lamp The distance of the lamp above the ocean is known as the focal plane height. 90 feet

18 Where are you going? Which lighthouse do you want to go to for your family vacation? Write about it then draw a picture for your parents! Use a topic sentence to tell the lighthouse you want to visit. Give 3 reasons why you chose that lighthouse. Using MacDraw, draw the lighthouse you chose.
