Examples of Experiential Service Learning Middle school students collaborated to determine how they might combat the rapid spread of West Nile Virus in their community

Investigation The students researched West Nile Virus and the primary way it is transmitted, through mosquito bites They worked together to find out why their community was especially prone to mosquitos by studying the insect and its life cycle

Planning The students decided that if they could convince residents to eliminate standing water on their properties, it would significantly reduce the mosquito population in their community

Action The students worked together with their teachers and mentors to develop a public service campaign to educate residents of their community about West Nile prevention

Reflection Students reflected throughout the project by keeping video journals of their interactions with the community and discussing their experiences in a group setting

Demonstration When the project was complete the students had successfully created a public service announcement that was broadcast on local television
