OBJ: Given notes, demo, activity sheet SWBAT explain magnetism and the properties of magnets with 70% accuracy. DN: Distribute Electricity & Magnetism Activity Sheets Watch Electromagnetism Video ACT: Introduction to Magnetism (copy notes) iPad (eSpark Assignment) Textbook, read p. 6-11, Work on What is Magnetism? Booklet. HW: Textbook, read p. 6-11; Complete What is Magnetism? Booklet; Work on Electricity and Magnetism Activity Sheets; EM Exam, Jan 29 (Thursday);

PROPERTIES OF MAGNETS Magnet: any material that attracts iron and materials that contain iron. Magnets attract or repel other magnets Magnets will point NORTH when swinging freely Magnetic mineral: magnetite Magnetic rock: loadstone Magnetic materials: iron, nickel, cobalt

PROPERTIES OF MAGNETS Magnetic Pole: end of a magnet How to identify magnetic poles: North Pole: where magnetic field lines leave South Pole: where magnetic field lines return Magnetism: attraction or repulsion of any material containing iron. Unlike/Opposite Magnetic Poles (NS): attract each other Like Magnetic Poles (NN)(SS): repel each other

SINGLE BAR MAGNET LEAVE RETURN Magnetic field line Strong: magnetic field lines close together Weak: magnetic field lines far apart

PROPERTIES OF MAGNETS Magnetic Force: attraction or repulsion between magnetic poles. Magnetic Field: area of magnetic force around a magnet. Magnetic Field Lines: invisible lines that map out a magnetic field around a magnet.(see transparancy and DEMO)

IMPORTANT MAGNETIC FIELD LINE FACTS Where field lines are far apart, magnetic force is weak Where field lines are close together, magnetic force is strong. Magnetic field lines leave at the North Pole Magnetic field lines return at the South Pole

DRAWING MAGNETIC FIELD PATTERNS SNN N N S SS S N LEAVERETURN magnetic field line
