1 Energy Management & Energy Efficiency Project Development New England Healthcare Engineers’ Society Twin State Seminar July 18, 2014 Brad DeBoer, Energy Consultant Efficiency Vermont

2 We go where the savings are Springfield Hospital Originally built in 1928; multiple subsequent additions 115,000 square feet; 4 floors 25 licensed beds Onsite laboratory Mobile MRI 192,000 BTU/sf/yr (site); 386,000 BTU/sf/yr (source) 12,606,000kBtu fuel, 2,766,000kWh annually

3 We go where the savings are ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

4 We go where the savings are Chasing ENERGY STAR Rating ENERGY STAR registration requires a score of 75 Reverse engineer the gap from 60 to 75 Requires reducing kBtu/ft 2 from 192 to 168, or 2,760,000kBtu (12.5% reduction) 19,000 gal. #4 oil, 800,000kWh, or a combination thereof Need accurate and timely reporting from electric utility and all other energy providers The bar is raised as more hospitals become more efficient

5 How Do We Get There? Working relationship with Facility Director is key to successful energy management & energy efficiency projects Lighting & HVAC are primary focus Kitchen holds some opportunity (exhaust hoods, refrigeration, appliances) Continuous tracking of all energy sources ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager (ESPM) initial benchmarking in 2011; updates periodically

6 We go where the savings are What is the Process? Identify potential energy efficiency projects & initiatives Retrofit New Construction/Market Opportunity Prioritize based on need, savings potential, and budget Implement Monitor results

7 We go where the savings are Energy Action Plan (EAP) Energy Action Plan
