Tongue Longitudinal section of skeletal muscle

Salivary Glands You have one slide with all three glands on separate sections. Saliva consists of watery (serous) and mucous (thicker, sticky) secretions. Sublingual – Contains only mucous cells Parotid – Contains only serous cells (which secrete into ducts) Submandibular (slide is labeled submaxillary) – Contains both mucous and serous cells

Sublingual Salivary gland Mucous acinus with mucous cells inside Sublingual glands have only mucous cells

Sublingual Salivary gland Sublingual glands have mostly mucous cells Mucous acinus with mucous cells inside

Small Intestine Duodenum Jejunum Ileum

Duodenum Plica Villus Plica are the folds into the intestine. Villi are the finger-like projections into the lumen. Plica and villi are found in all three parts of the small intestine.

Duodenum Mucosa Submucosa Muscularis externa Adventitia

Duodenum Villus Brunner’s glands Brunner’s glands are only found in the duodenum. They produce bicarbonate to deactivate the acidity of the chyme from the stomach. The villi of the duodenum are short and fat

Layers of the Small Intestine Mucosa – Villi are located here Submucosa – Brunner’s glands are located here (duodenum only) Muscularis externa – Made of smooth muscle to push food along Serosa (or adventitia) – Made of loose connective tissue

Duodenum Villus Mucosa Submucosa Muscularis externa Serosa Brunner’s glands

Jejunum Plica Villus

Jejunum Villi The villi of the jejunum are tall and skinny
