Proposal of the Global Land Cover Ground Truth(GLCGT) Database Ryutaro Tateishi Center for Environmental Remote Sensing (CEReS), Chiba University, Japan E-mail: tateishi@ceres.cr.chiba-u.ac.jptateishi@ceres.cr.chiba-u.ac.jp GLC 2000 – “FIRST RESULTS” WORKSHOP JRC – Ispra, 18-22 March 2002

ground truth data = training data + validation data

Mayaux’s plan on quality assessment - use existing validation material - prepare new validation material validation material  validation data  validation data for distribution Tateishi’s proposal - distribute usable validation(or GT) data widely

5 1 105 2 Global Land Cover Ground Truth database (GLCGT database) The GLCGT database consists of regional land cover ground truth (RLCGT) data. The geographical size of a RLCGT data is flexible, from a city size to a continental size. --- metadata of RLCGT data (text) --- GT land cover code data (raster) --- GT site code data (raster) --- description of GT sites (text) --- optional data (text, raster, or any)

metadata of RLCGT data - RLCGT code (this code is assigned by the coordinator of the GLCGT database project) - the organization or project which produced this RLCGT data - representative person which produced this RLCGT data (name, affiliation) - contact person for this RLCGT data (name, affiliation, postal address or fax or email) - date of the production of this RLCGT data - latitude of the north edge of this region - latitude of the south edge of this region - longitude of the west edge of the region - longitude of the east edge of the region - pixel size (by arc second, must be square) - number of pixels (east-west) - number of pixels (north-south) - definition of the additional land cover code if necessary(usable codes are 201-255) - description about optional data if there is

Description of ground truth (GT) sites Site code:4 Lat/long:N43d18', E141d45' Land cover code:1 Land cover:Paddy (70%) and soybean (30%) Information source: Land use map 1:200,000, 1982 (By Geographical Survey Institute, Japan) + Knowledge (Tateishi and Hongo) Site code:17 Lat/long:N43d39'37", E127d22'55" Land cover code:209 Land cover:Rice and corn Information source: Field survey, Jul-Aug 2001 (Zhu) (FS -Point No. 20) Site code:34 Lat/long:Northwest direction from N53d53', E109d57.7' Land cover code:203 Land cover:Bare area (Mountain top), Barguzin Mountain Information source: Field survey, Aug. 2000 (Tateishi) (FS-Point No. 24) + Topographic Map, USSR, 1:200,000 (Survey 1982~1984, published 1997)

Potential input to GLCGT database (a) from existing validation material/data of other projects (b) from new independent materials (c) from training data of regional mapping in GLC2000 project

Conclusion Proposal: collection of ground truth data based on “GLCGT database” concept
