ODYSSEY BOOK 6 test 1)What people live on the island of Scherie and who is their king and queen? The Phaeacians, King Alcinous 2) Describe Nausicaa. Tall & beautiful as a goddess (line17) 3) What literary technique is the phrase “the bright-eyed Athena”? Give TWO reasons to explain why the bard may have used this technique. Epithet. They are used to help us build up a picture of the character, and help bards to memorise the story, and to fit it to the hexameter rhythm

ODYSSEY BOOK 6 test 4) What thoughts had Athena put into Nausicaa’s head? How? With what purpose? Thoughts of her marriage and to go washing the next morning. By suggesting it in a dream as one of her closest friends. She wants Nausicaa to find Odysseus. 5) What reason does Nausicaa give to her father for going to the washing holes (Page 77)? What does this tell us about Nausicaa? To provide clean clothing for her Brothers to wear at dances. She is crafty/embarrassed to show she is thinking of marriage. 6) How does Athena intervene to ensure that Odysseus and Nausicaa meet? Why does the goddess want them to meet? (pg 79) Arranged for Odysseus to wake up before the girls went back home. She want Odysseus to meet and be helped by king Alcinous

ODYSSEY BOOK 6 test 7) Describe their meeting. What does her behaviour reveal about her character compared to that of her maids? She stood her ground, not running off in fright. She is brave, and not a silly, giggly girl like her maids 8) What do Odysseus’ first words to Nausicaa show about his character? Quote to illustrate your answer. He is considerate and courteous but also cunning in flattery. “I am at your knees. Are you some goddess or a mortal woman” 9) What two things does Odysseus ask of Nausicaa? (Page 80) “Direct me to the town and, give me some colthes to pput around myself” line 178)

ODYSSEY BOOK 6 test 10) Describe the example of guest-friendship on page 81. Quote the words she uses to require it. She gets her servants to give him food & drink, and bathe him since “all strangers and beggars come under the protection of Zeus” 11) How and for what purpose does Athena intervene in Page 82? Does she achieve her purpose? Provide evidence to justify your answer. She made him look taller, sturdier, more presentable, so that Nausicaa would be attracted to him, & help him further. Nausicaa “gazed at him with admiration”. 12) What do the words “my white-armed girls” tell us about Homeric society. They value girls who do the inside/house work and not sunburned “tom-boys”

ODYSSEY BOOK 6 test 13) Describe in detail the plan that Nausicaa devises in order to help Odysseus reach her father’s palace? To wait in a grove outside th etown, then follow her rather than come with her (so as not to cause gossip), then she gives directions (or ask for any child) to the palace, then go through the courtyard, enter the great hall… 14) What does this plan show about Nausicaa? She is clever and very keen to protect her reputation/honour 15) How does Nausicca let Odysseus know that she likes him? What does this show about her? She says gossips might say talk about her being with such a handsome stranger, say she intends to marry him. This shows she is open to marry Odysseus, she is forward but indirect (i.e. she doesn’t actually say she wants to but puts it in his head as the gossip of townsfolk.)
