3 © Lenka Lexová History the first major settlement was founded by the Romans in 43 AD, they called the place "Londinium" during the 2 nd century, Roman London had a population of around 60,000 inhabitants by the 7 th century, the Anglo-Saxons had created a new settlement what is now Covent Garden 1066 after the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror was crowned King of England in the newly finished Westminster Abbey Black Death struck in the mid-14 th century, when London lost nearly a third of its population in the 16 th century William Shakespeare in London on 5 th November 1605, the Gunpowder Plot, Guy Fawkes in September 1666 the Great Fire of London broke out in the City and destroyed over 13,000 buildings

4 © Lenka Lexová Government the administration of London is coordinated by the Greater London Authority and 33 smaller authorities the Government of the United Kingdom is located around the Palace of Westminster many government departments are located close to the Parliament, particularly along the Whitehall, including Prime Minister's residence at 10 Downing Street The Greater London Authority is based in City Hall, Southwark

6 © Lenka Lexová Population there live nearly 8 million inhabitants 58% are White British, 2.5% White Irish and 8.9 % are Other White 10.7 per cent of London's population are Black, Black African and Black Caribbean 13.1 per cent are of South Asian origin, such as Indians, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis other Londoners are of mixed race, Chinese and 1.9 per cent belong to other ethnic groups

8 © Lenka Lexová Sports London hosted the 1908 and 1948 Summer Olympics and will host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games London's most popular sport is football and it has thirteen League football clubs, including five in the Premier League: Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United from 1924, the original Wembley Stadium was the home of the English national football team London's best-known annual sports competition is the Wimbledon Tennis Championship other popular sports are rugby and cricket
