There are many different views as to the role of scripture in man’s salvation. Seldom are the scriptures viewed as really and absolutely authoritative. “We believe the Bible is important, but we do not affirm that the scriptures are necessary to man’s becoming saved or remaining saved.”

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? “15: And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Tim. 3).

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? “6: I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8: But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Gal. 1).

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? “14: But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?” (Gal. 2.)

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? “9: Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 10: If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds” (2 John).

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? “7: And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8: In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power” (2 Thes. 1).

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? “22: Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23: But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24: God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4: 24, cp. Rom. 9: 1).

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? “22: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23: Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all” (Eph. 1, cp. 2 John 9-11).

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? “1: Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Cor. 7). “14: But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel…” (Gal. 2).

2 Peter 1: 5-11

Are The Scriptures Authoritative? I believe all can see who will that the scriptures are authoritative. They constitute our creed, source of conduct, and provide us with the spiritual sustenance that we need (cp. I Pet. 2: 1, 2). “5: To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you” (Gal. 2).
