1 Broadwater School History Department 1 Victorian pride What can a town’s buildings tell us about Victorian minds? Step One The Mills Details: they were five / ten storeys high and had the latest diesel / steam engines and cotton spinning machinery. Fielden Pride: our business uses less / more raw cotton / wool than any other business in the country. We are the smallest / biggest. The Railway Details: The line runs between Manchester and Leeds/ Godalming and reached Todmorden in 1480 /1840. The viaduct has 12 arches. Fielden Pride: we brought the railway to Todmorden. The magnificent viaduct makes the town more important. The railway helps our business.

It was built in the modern / gothic style and designed by John Gibson / Gibbons. It had an elegant spire and beautiful stained glass. Fielden Pride: we have given the town a beautiful new car park / church that is also a memorial to our father, John Fielden / Fields. The Fielden Temperance Hotel Details: It was built in 1080 / 1880 and served no alcohol / coffee. Fielden Pride: we are proud of how we are stopping the evils of alcohol / chocolate.

Step Two The Fielden Temperance Hotel Details: It was built in 1080 / 1880 and served no alcohol / coffee. Fielden Pride: we are proud of how we are stopping the evils of alcohol / chocolate. Step 3 The Town Hall Details: started in 1680 / 1860 and finished with money from the Fieldens. They used the architect John Gibbon / Gibson. It cost £54,000. It was opened in 1875 /1975 and given to the people of Todmorden. Fielden Pride: we gave a beautiful / useless and expensive Town Hall to Todmorden. Dobroyd Castle Details: was / was not really a castle. It was the Fielden family home that was built in the gothic / villa style by John Feilden (junior). It had 66 / 6 rooms and cost £72,000. Fielden Pride: the castle shows that we are a rich and important / unimportant family.
