7 © 2004 Capella University - Confidential - Do not distribute7 Clinical Practice Orientation Capella School of Education Responsibilities  Review/approve application prior to the start of clinical practice  Prepare candidates through coursework  Assign a Capella University Supervisor to facilitate communication among the University, the Candidate, and the Site Supervisor  Provide the Site Supervisor  Evaluation forms  Contact information

8 © 2004 Capella University - Confidential - Do not distribute8 Clinical Practice Orientation Capella School of Education Responsibilities (cont’d)  To maintain regular contact between the University and Site Supervisor, to consist of at least electronic and phone contact at the beginning, middle, and end of the clinical experience.  To notify the Candidate that he/she is responsible for complying with all policies and procedures governing Candidates at the site, and that he/she is required to conduct him/herself according to the professional and ethical standards of an educator.  To provide immediate consultation with the University Supervisor should disagreements arise between the Candidate and the Site Supervisor (acknowledging that the Site Supervisor has primary authority for all activities of the Candidate at the site).

9 © 2004 Capella University - Confidential - Do not distribute9 Clinical Practice Orientation Capella School of Education Candidate Responsibilities  To immediately notify the University Supervisor, Clinical Training Faculty Lead, or soeclinicalexperience@capella.edu of any changes to the Clinical Practice Application including dates, hours, supervision, etc. soeclinicalexperience@capella.edu  To abide by Capella University Learner Code of Conduct (Policy 4.02.02 in the Capella University Catalog) and all appropriate protocols relating to their clinical experience.  To conduct oneself according to community standards as an educator at all times during the clinical experience, and to adhere to the rules, policies, regulations, and standards of the Site.  To notify the Site Supervisor(s), University Supervisor, and Clinical Training Faculty Lead of any relevant impairment of competence to perform as expected during the clinical experiences, whether the impairment arises from physical, psychological, or other causes.  To obtain any additional training and/or education deemed necessary by the Site Supervisor(s), University Supervisor, and Clinical Training Faculty Lead in order to conduct the clinical experience at a minimum standard of competence.  To represent oneself as a Candidate during appropriate times during the clinical experience placement.

10 © 2004 Capella University - Confidential - Do not distribute10 Clinical Practice Orientation School of Education Candidate Requirements  Candidate must possess a 3.0 GPA  Candidate must have completed all other Core and Specialization non-dissertation coursework (unless otherwise approved)  Candidate must submit and gain approval for the Clinical Practice Application

11 © 2004 Capella University - Confidential - Do not distribute11 Clinical Practice Orientation Site and Site Supervisor Responsibilities  To verify the chosen Site Supervisor(s) has the appropriate time and ability to commit to supervision of the Candidate.  To provide opportunities for the Candidate to engage in activities necessary to complete the Candidate’s clinical practice and course of study.  To provide the learner with adequate workspace to carry out the clinical experience.  To maintain regular communication with Capella’s University Supervisor and to communicate any concerns to the University Supervisor or Clinical Training Faculty Lead in a timely manner.  To notify the University Supervisor immediately if there are any changes to the Clinical Practice Application including dates, hours, supervision, etc.

Definition of Clinical Hours  Total Hours: the sum of direct, non-direct, and individual supervision hours  Direct Contact Hours: time wherein the candidate is directly interacting with members of the P-12 population.  Non-Direct Hours: all activities on site that are not direct contact with members of the P-12 population. clients. Could include note writing, research, planning, etc.  Supervision with Site Supervisor: supervision with the licensed and approved supervisor(s) and/or Capella faculty.

15 © 2004 Capella University - Confidential - Do not distribute15 Other Information  Monitoring Progress: Although the faculty monitor the attitudes, readiness and skills of each candidate with every contact, issues may still arise that are unforeseen once the learner is directly challenged by the realities of the field. Please assess the intern at your site frequently and consult with the intern and faculty supervisor often.  Liability Insurance ($1,000,000/$3,000,000) : Capella University is coveredfor the duration of all field and clinical experiences the candidate completes. If a copy of the certificate is required, the intern must request one from the Capella finance office.
