2 Objectives  By the end of today, SWBAT…  Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells  Describe the role of DNA, the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and the nucleus in the cell

3 Why do we care about cells?  You are alive  Parts of you are alive!  Parts of those parts are alive!  Where does it end?  The cell!  The cell is the smallest form of life  ALL living organisms are made of cells

8 What makes them different?  Key Point #1: The function of a cell (what it does) is determined by its structure (what it is made of)  DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic code that instructs the cell how to run (it’s what makes you “you”)  Organelle: Part of a cell

9 Cell membrane  The cell membrane is a thin, flexible barrier around the cell  It controls what goes in and out of the cell  All cells have this

10 Cytoplasm  The cytoplasm is everything inside of the cell membrane  The cytoplasm contains all the cell organelles  All cells have this

11 Nucleus  Nucleus holds DNA and controls the cell’s activities  The cell’s own mini- brain  The nucleus has its own special membrane

12 Eukaryotic cells  Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus  All multi-celled organisms are eukaryotes  So all PLANTS and ANIMALS are eukaryotes

13 Prokaryotic cells  DNA is floating in the cytoplasm  Always single-celled organisms
