Comparing New Building Pre-Construction and Post Occupancy Energy Models with Actual Performance 2014 CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference – Session 47 June 18, 2014 Gerry Hamilton

How Energy Models are Staged ■ Utilize Building Energy Models ■ Economic Model ■ Final Design Model ■ Evaluation Model Applied at different stages of the project. Permitting CDs Programming SDs DDs Turnover & Operation

Recently Completed “High Performance” Buildings ■ Lokey Stem Cell Research Building ■ Large Wet Lab ■ Knight Management Center ■ Multi building office / classroom facility ■ William H. Neukom Building ■ Simple office building

Lokey Stem Cell Research Building ■ Medical School lab/research building ■ Opened in Fall 2010 ■ 258,000 square feet ■ 380 VAV fumehoods ■ Zone level heating and cooling ■ Heat recovery on main air handler units

Lokey Stem Cell Research Building – Data

Lokey Stem Cell Research Building - Analysis Zone level heating + cooling is very effective Heat recovery system is more effective than modeled for this 100% outside air AHU system. The plug load for lab space used in the original load calculation is over estimated by a factor of three.

Lokey – Benchmark Comparisons

Knight Management Center ■ Stanford Graduate School of Business ■ Completed in 2011 ■ 387,510 square feet (eight buildings) ■ Includes: offices, classrooms, conference rooms, library, auditoria, and dining pavilion ■ LEED TM Platinum ■ Extensive submetering

Knight Management Center – Data

Knight Management Center – Analysis ■ Design operating hours were greatly exceeded ■ Could see high nighttime plug and lighting loads thanks to submetering ■ Utilized temporary occupancy sensors to verify ■ (Need an industry metric to account for space utilization) ■ Heating load under-estimated in model ■ Found a few RCx type measures through post occupancy energy modeling effort ■ Review of global heating setpoints ■ Schedule of several AHUs

Knight Center – Benchmark Comparisons EIA - US Energy Information Admin

William H. Neukom Building ■ Law School office building ■ Completed in 2011 ■ 65,000 square feet ■ VAV Reheat ■ Operable windows

Neukom Building – Data

Neukom Building – Data Analysis Model underestimates heating loads Model missed some electric loads Some outdoor lighting More emergency lighting than expected (runs 24/7) Power converter and battery backup for emergency lighting parasitic load

Neukom Building – Benchmark Comparisons EIA - US Energy Information Admin
