2 2 Still open point: Lead Several lead types have been mechanically studied at CERN, LNF and TecnoCut sites. For what BAM is concerned: - Pb/Ca remains the best candidate from mechanical point of view - Pure lead, Pb/Ag and Pb/Cu are too soft so they are rejected - Ternary Leads (Pb/Ag/Al and Pb/Ag/Sn) is slightly better, meaning that piling and pressure are “feasible”. To keep planarity while piling is more critical than with Pb/Ca. Still to be evaluated the performance at nominal speed (max acceleration) and the possibility to recover the loss of planarity with pile pressure. Very important for final evaluation is the cleaning and stickiness of Pb

3 3 Still open point: ECC packaging Vacuum packaging (standard origami + vacuum): laminated film + new welding hedge  reliable vacuum Mechanical packaging: Plastic/glass fiber spring + glass fiber scotch  more robust Both solutions are theoretically reliable Vacuum packaging is hermetic but very fragile to manipulations Mechanical packaging is clearly more robust. We have proved the light tightness. Evaluation of the gas tightness was performed in May at CERN (see C. Sirignano talk for more details)

4 4 Still open point: ECC packaging Tests performed at CERN with ECC packed with vacuum and mechanical (with and without thin PE) options. ECC were kept 24h in RPC gas and H 2 (10%)+N 2 (90%) mixture: No effect detected (see C. Sirignano talk for more details) Evaluation of the gas tightness

5 5 Still open points: CS CS In Nagoya it was decided the CS envelope shape (with 3 welding lines and folding on sides vertically and horizontally on top of ECC) Still to define: CS packaging and delivery boxes: - Type of laminated film used for CS packaging: compatible with LNGS safety rules and relevant for choice of glue to fix it on CSS - Size of carton paper boxes, - number of CS’s in each box (relevant for fire risk evaluation), CS labelling: - bar codes to read and register in BAM database ? - where they are ? Important effects on the emulsion BAM operator job - what we have to record on the BAM database and on the brick label? - do we need for CS a different label from the ECC one ? We need at least 100 CS samples for BAM (already asked in Nagoya)

6 6 CS & CSS handling during OPERA data taking If we go for the ECC vacuum packaging solution: we propose to use for the CS the SAME laminated film used for ECC (it will be provided by Europe to Japan). This will simplify the glue choice: the SAME glue for both sides no NYLON only PPE The TecnoCut proposed to have a CSS structure done with 2 pieces mechanically clamped together and each of them glued to ECC and CS respectively: this will separate the role/choice of glue (hard, quick drying & long term gluing) from the need to detach the CS from ECC with no mechanical stress on emulsions inside both of them. If we go for mechanical solution: no need of CSS, CS will be directly glued on ECC flat surface Still open points: CS &CSS

7 7 Still open points: skates Skates The choice of vacuum/mechanical solution will affect the need to study or not the skate final shape and its mass production. In mechanical case we do not need skates but we will add a skating tape on the bottom of the brick In vacuum case the skates will be glues on brick-to-brick side on the ECC and on ECC side opposite to CS: - if we want to remove the CS we have not to glue the “skate CS side” New skate design proposed by TecnoCut and already validated by LAPP colleagues We need to start ordering NOW all the tooling to start skate mass production by next fall Sliding way Glue

8 8 Still open point: ECC packaging This is the MAIN point to close and endorse in present meeting. The ECC packaging choice will have severe effects on brick components and BAM in terms of: studies, design, construction, tests, costs, timing. Decision is needed NOW ANY delay will be a NET delay on the project

9 9 The BAM project is definitely based on a strong synergy in between the OPERA Collaboration and the TecnoCut Consortium (this is formally stated in BAM specs too) The firm will design, assemble and test robotics and validate technical performance of the BAM, but ALL the performance at emulsion level MUST be validated by the OPERA Collaboration This refers especially to: emulsion chemical compatibility with other BAM and brick components, photographic effects on the emulsion due to mechanical manipulation, alignment and planarity at micron level BAM Construction Strategy A lot of emulsion processing and analysis in next months

10 10 We have set up two BAM working groups: BAM group : composed by BAM-OPERA colleagues + TecnoCut-GFT engineers, which will meet regularly (once a month up to now) to keep under control the evolution of the BAM construction phases and the correct feedback from the OPERA Collaboration validations BAM-LNGS group : composed by BAM group + LNGS technical engineers, which will also meet regularly (once a month up to now) to keep under control the preparation of the BAM site in LNGS and control the compatibility of the BAM construction, installation and operation with the LNGS infrastructure, logistic and safety BAM working groups

11 11 BAM and BAM-LNGS working groups met 4 times at LNGS since last February. A 3D AutoCAD file has been produced which will include the BAM present design and ALL BAM site infrastructures. Up to now BAM, civil engineer works, air conditioning and clean room system have been inserted. In next month it will be added the electric networking and the safety systems (fire, smoke and other sensors) The BAM site has been classified in terms of safety class (REI30 according to Italian law) Safety plan for BAM installation and operation is being defined with LNGS experts. 17 17 The piling station of the BAM First mechanical tests of lead and emulsion manipulation with anthropomorphic ABB robot have started to check the precision in the piling operation Further studies are needed on: - vacuum sucking device - photographic effects

18 18 The belt of piling station: dark room test results In May ‘04 light test of pile station belt was performed in Montech firm (Switzerland) A lead/emulsion pile + 7 emulsion films were exposed in dark room while the belt running for 10 minutes (factor 5 w.r.t. real exposure of emulsion and lead/emulsion piles) No effect due to any light produced during motion was observed in emulsion (see C.
