MISSION STATEMENT The American Association of Nurse Attorneys provides resources, education and leadership to its members and the healthcare and legal communities regarding health law and policy.

GOALS To promote and enhance TAANA and the profession of the nurse attorney To provide educational programs, products, and services to members, chapters, and the public To facilitate communication, collaboration, and leadership among members To identify and influence health law and policy issues and to serve as a resource for the healthcare and legal communities

In the beginning… 1977 Cynthia E. Northrop placed notices in various publications requesting that nurse attorneys or nurses in law school identify themselves.

In the beginning… 1978 Development of a Roster of Nurses with Law Degrees or in Law School was begun; ABA and ANA were contacted.

In the beginning… 1979 Development of a Roster continues; thoughts of an organization begin; related organizations were contacted.

In the beginning… 1980 In March, the first Directory of Nurses with Law Degrees or in Law School was published;

In the beginning… 1980 Regions were established (Region I – west coast; Region II – mid-America; Region III – east coast). Region III held the first meeting on September 28th in Laurel, MD.

In the beginning… 1981 Additional regional meetings were held; in April, the second Directory was distributed; the first local meeting organized by Sandy Berkowitz was held in Philadelphia on November 18th.

In the beginning… 1982 Additional regional and local meetings were held; on August 24th, Cynthia E. Northrop, Ann Mech and Elizabeth Price signed the Articles of Incorporation which were notarized by a used car salesman.

In the beginning… 1982 First national meeting of the American Association of Nurse Attorneys (AANA) was held on November in Washington, DC. Over 70 nurse attorneys and nurses in law school attended. Senator Edward M. Kennedy sent congratulatory telegram.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
TAANA established the Distinguished Service Award in 1985 to recognize an individual member’s leadership role in, and significant contributions to, TAANA as an association. The award is intended to serve as an expression of sincere gratitude for the member’s committed leadership, participation in, and contributions to the purposes of TAANA and its growth as the professional association for nurse attorneys.

OUTSTANDING ADVOCATE AWARD
TAANA established the Outstanding Advocate Award in 1985 to recognize an individual member’s outstanding legal advocacy. The Awards Committee recognizes that a nurse attorney can be an advocate in many varied ways, such as impacting legislation, authoring scholarly works such as law review articles, books, journal articles, as well as achieving significant rulings in appellate practice, trial practice, and administrative law practice (i.e. hearings before various state boards). The award is intended to give recognition to a member whose legal theories, strategies and abilities demonstrate outstanding advocacy.
