3 3 Framing the Context: The primary goal of the first read is for students to make meaning from text. The secondary goal is for students to learn how to become metacognitive when reading. This is done through Explicit Strategy Instruction.

9 9 Selection Vocabulary The purpose of the selection vocabulary is to teach students a strategy for figuring out the meaning of unknown words. Word structure Apposition Context Clues Cognates

10 10 Explicit Strategy Instruction Students make meaning from the text. Students become metacognitive with strategy use. This is done through a modeled read and think-aloud.

11 11 Using Reading Strategies Pre-identifies the strategies to be modeled. The teacher names, defines, and models the strategies to be used and tells why good readers use these strategies. Strategies are posted on the board for teacher to reference during the instructional period.
