3 3 First choice topic Environment ENV.2007.2.1.4.2. Use of natural resources: the impact on biodiversity, ecosystem goods and services.ENV.2007.2.1.4.2. Use of natural resources: the impact on biodiversity, ecosystem goods and services. Improve understanding of how the use of natural resources affects biodiversity … the resilience and resistance of ecological-economic systems, … develop or improve methods to measure and value biodiversity... detect when ecosystems are approaching the limits of their natural functioning or productive capacity … determine the sustainability of various intensities of use of components of biodiversity and of ecosystems. Winterthur/Zurich, January 30, 2007 International Partnering Meeting

4 4 Key competencesKey competences The CRA-ISSEL is a forest research institution at national level. It has developed a long-term experience on ecology and management of natural forests and reforested areas. The current guidelines concern applied research on the dynamics of forests under the different management options available according to the locally prevailing societal, economical and environmental functions. International Partnering Meeting Winterthur/Zurich, January 30, 2007

5 5 Skills within the organizationSkills within the organization A special expertise has been devoted to develop suited adaptive management strategies aimed at restoring, preserving or improving both specific and ecosystem up to landscape diversity. Ecosystem resilience and resistance is being tested into managed and no more managed forests (protected areas, protection forests) as well as into the widespread coppice area i.e. the originally most intensively managed forest type where a multiple use was often a rule.
