14 Offshore project C-power 60 wind turbines of min. 3.6 MW to max. 5 MW Annual generation of 710 GWh to 1000 GWh Enough energy for the annual consumption of 200,000 to 300,000 families Enough energy to provide all the families in Belgium with electricity for three weeks Avoided CO2 emission: 450,000 tonnes/year (compared with the environmentally most friendly gas power stations) = the annual CO2 absorption of a forested area of 87,668 ha = a strip of forest 15km wide along the entire Belgian coastline = 4 x the area of public forest within the Flemish Region 1/3rd of the Belgian renewable energy target by 2010

15 renewable energy Target 2010: 6%

16 In accordance with the Kyoto agreement and the world climate conferences, a European Directive (EU/77/01) was issued on 27 September 2001. The EU target aims at generation from renewable energy sources corresponding to 12% of primary energy requirements by 2010. This overall European target is subdivided into targets for each Member State, on the basis of the existing installed capacity of renewable power generation methods and above all taking into account their development potential. The graph below shows that Belgium (and Luxembourg) has been given the lowest target in absolute terms (6%). Since there are so few renewable forms of energy installed here, in relative terms Belgium has to achieve the greatest increase (x6) in renewable forms of energy in the whole European Union.
