T ODAY I NTERNET A DDRESSING TCIP/IP I NTERNET PROTOCOL V4 L AB 7: C ONFIGURE IP ADDRESS

R EAL WORLD SITUATION Jessica is a Network Administrator She works for a company that has purchased another company. She needs to make the 2 networks work together. To do this she will need to understand TCP/IP addressing.

I NTERNET PROTOCOL : Agreed on instructions to allow computers to communicate

I NTERNET PROTOCOL : Many protocols exist for different tasks

I NTERNET PROTOCOL : Protocol suite: group of networking protocols that work together

TCP/IP PROTOCOL Protocol suite used for network communications Designed for the internet, now widely used Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol

IP V 4 (I NTERNET PROTOCOL VERSION 4) Used to move data from one location to another

IP V 4 (I NTERNET PROTOCOL VERSION 4) One of main functions: help data packets find their way to the proper destination IP addressing 2 systems, IPv4 and IPv6

IP V 4 A DDRESSING Known as “best effort” delivery protocol Focus on getting data to correct location Not concerned if it does not get there

IP V 4 A DDRESSING Consists of network number and host number

IP V 4 A DDRESSING Used to identify a host/node Host/node = Name for computer, printer, network device associated with an IP address in TCP/IP network Name: Michael Student: ID # 356-791

IP V 4 A DDRESSING No 2 hosts on the same network can share the same IP address Name: Michael Student: ID # 356-791 Name: Michael Student: ID # 228-350

IP V 4 A DDRESSING Numbers are computed in binary form and presented in decimal form Binary form: 00011110.00111100.00010111.10011010 Decimal form: 30.60.23.154

C ONVERTING BINARY TO DECIMAL 168421 Decimal form = 10.20.30.31 01010 10100

C ONVERTING BINARY TO DECIMAL Binary form: 00011110.00111100.00010111.10011010 Decimal form: 30.60.23.154 1286432168421 0 0 0 1 1 1 1 0

IP V 4 A DDRESSING Consists of four octetsoctets Octet = an eight-bit (or one Byte) value (32 bits long) Binary form: 00011110.00111100.00010111.10011010

IP V 4 N ETWORK C LASSES Classes identify which part is the network number, which is the host number Allows multiple uses IP address: 192.130.227.27 IP address: 192.130.227.27 Network ID Host ID

S UBNETTING Breaking up IP address to be used in more than one way IP address: 192.130.227.27 IP address: 192.130.227.27 Network ID Host ID

D O YOU KNOW YOUR AREA CODES ? (323)(562) (818) (949) (212)

IP V 4 N ETWORK C LASSES Class A: large networks always start with 1-127 Ex: 125.10.1.55 Class B: medium Start with 128-191 Class C: small networks Start with 192-223 Help us quickly identify a network Just like area codes help us identify a phone number: 310, 323, 562

S UBNET M ASK Used to determine to which subnetwork (network within a network)a particular IPv4 address belongssubnetwork Assigned to each host on a TCP/IP network Can be used to quickly identify the network class of an IPv4 address Class A subnet mask: 255.0.0.0 Class B subnet mask: 255.255.0.0 Class C subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

I N CLASS LAB 7 a: Labsim 5.15 Configure IP addresses (5 points) b: Binary Conversion Activity(5 points) N EXT C LASS Configuring Host Addressing Labsim homework: 5.26
