3 Bill Bartling April, 2006 All the big problems were solved Supercomputing –“a world market for maybe 5 computers” Cracked the atom Sputnik pinging happily away Antibiotics –“closing the door on infectious disease” Men in space

4 Bill Bartling April, 2006 Fast Forward 50 years to Generation “Y” The Future has arrived –Playing now in their bedrooms –Fast processing, big memory, extraordinary graphics –Usage skills are analogous to the BB’s tuning a transistor radio –Multi-tasking a way of life –Virtual networks of friends and study pals –Expert at long-range collaborative interactions –Active in programming and user groups –Involved, engaged, enthralled, excited –Renaissance techies –Its become cool to be a nerd

The cost of energy is dominated by the cost of extraction and refinement The Flat World enables and welcomes new knowledge industry economies connected via virtual networks

8 Bill Bartling April, 2006 And An Internet Culture A great trust in the Internet and by extension, in people they have never met (wiki, open source) Sharing in Virtual Societies (BLOGS etc) “Google” the world and discover anything on your own Knowledge is “free” A new view of the workday and workplace – where ever you are, whenever you need to and with whomever you want to Energy is required to power this, and it is ubiquitous and sufficient A great trust in the Internet and by extension, in people they have never met (wiki, open source) Sharing in Virtual Societies (BLOGS etc) “Google” the world and discover anything on your own Knowledge is “free” A new view of the workday and workplace – where ever you are, whenever you need to and with whomever you want to Energy is required to power this, and it is ubiquitous and sufficient Business is global, national identities are transparent and cultural and political borders are breached A microsecond is a long time to wait Parallel minds work in multiple simultaneous worlds, managing multiple complex cultures Incredible richness of media from streaming video to multi- media to webcams – we “live” in the media, we don’t watch it The world is small – everything is connected – easy time travel from one reality to another
