Today Multiple Single-service Networks Tomorrow Single Multi-service Network Expensive Efficient Services Servers Content Content PSTN Mobile Internet Cable/Broadcasting Communication Control Media Conversion Media Conversion Backbone Network Wireless Access Wired Access Now let’s move on to the first part of my talk, which is about NGN overview. First, I want to start by giving you some background information of NGN. NGN stands for Next Generation Networks. Anyway, Today, We have many telecommunication Networks, such as telephone network, mobile network, Internet, Cable television, Leased line network. To provide each network services, we have to deploy and operate separate networks. For example, to provide mobile services, we have to deploy Public Land Mobile Network. But in the future the networks will be converged by layers, such as service layer, application and contents, control layer, such as softswitch, SIP servers, transport network, IP-based backbone network, and the last access layer, such as wireless and narrowband/broadband access network. Clients Access Transport & Switching Networks

35 Changing Telecoms Trends
Fixed line usage is reducing dramatically for “classical” services Mobile use is increasing steadily even though penetration is already high. Broadband Internet deployment shows a rapid growth trend. Broadband Mobile Fixed FIXED: operators face NEW challenges from low-cost operators, mobile operators and VoIP. Although profits on fixed voice and data are presently high, the trend is for steeply decreasing volume due to new competitive technologies as well as pressure on prices and margins. Fixed has the advantage of quality and reliability and will look to reducing network costs and increasing revenue through new services. MOBILE: End of 2005, there will be almost two billion mobile subscriptions worldwide. Strong growth in developing countries (including Asia and Latin America) Voice is still the main source of revenues and profits (80%) New profit opportunities from enhanced content such as ring tones, wallpapers and games, and new services (Conferencing, Streaming, Chat). Mobile operators are opening new (world) markets, eating the fixed operator minutes, as well as developing new services. BROADBAND: continues to proliferate - technology delivering ever increasing bandwidth to a demanding customer base. However profits tend to decline due to competitively between providers. Churn is high and overall profit is low VoIP: call volume and the user base is rapidly increasing, rapid take up in businesses for corporate communications. However growth is limited by shortfalls in VoIP's quality and reliability.

Basic concept of Next Generation Network. Monolithic networks evolve towards a layered NGN architecture with open interfaces. NGN Planes Planes and functions Application Plane enables the provisioning of services and provides the control and logic for the execution of services Control Plane controls the elements of the network, establishes and tears down media connections Transport Plane is responsible for the transport of media and signaling messages Management Plane covers network management ensuring service fulfillment, service assurance and billing Access Networks connect customer networks or terminals with the components of the NGN network and aggregate the dedicated traffic type Application Plane Value Added Service Creation Control Plane Basic control service Transport Plane Management Plane Packet Based Transport Access Networks NGN – Next Generation Networks.ppt Bayram Akbari

Transition to Next Generation Network. Overlay approach is an option that allows for a smooth and flexible transition to NGN . NGN overlay Description PSTN and PLMN remain the key production platforms for pure voice services NGN overlay platform is used to serve business and consumer customers with integrated services NGN overlay will be further developed in line with market requirements Substitution will not be started as long as financial assessment is yielding no incentive or technical reasons (e.g. failure rate of components or lack of system support) makes it necessary ILLUSTRATIVE CS - Domain Other PSTN / PLMN SDH PS - Domain Other NGN SDP IMS IP WWW IP- Phone NGN – Next Generation Networks.ppt Bayram Akbari

It could be said that the twentieth century was the era of telephony, but now the twenty-first century ICT situation marks it as the era that transcends telephony. From analog to digital, from fixed to mobile, from narrow band to broadband, from PSTN to IP, -- integrating these trends, I think, we can symbolize the present situation as "IBMW," or Internet, broadband, mobile and wireless.
