2 African Centre for Statistics Outline Background ASDI: Structure ASDI: Components and Variables Comparison ASDI with SCBI and SCI Ranking and Scores of African Countries According to their ASDI Summary and Conclusions

3 African Centre for Statistics Background Global level: Marrakech Action Plan for Statistics (MAPS) Regional level: Reference Regional Strategic Framework for Statistical Capacity Building in Africa (RRSF) Need for monitoring the implementation: African Statistical Development Index (ASDI)

4 African Centre for Statistics ASDI: Structure RRSF: 12 Strategies and 79 recommendations  79 potential variables for ASDI Criteria of selection: validity, comparability, simplicity, and data availability Results: 42 variables organized in five components –Functioning of the national statistical system (NSS) –Statistical infrastructure –Data dissemination –Human capital –Funding

13 African Centre for Statistics Summary and Conclusions ASDI is designed for measuring progress made by African countries in terms of statistical development and for comparisons in this regard. Variables and components of the ASDI were selected by taking into account the conceptual framework, statistical tools and methodologies, and data availability. ASDI covers well the components of PARIS21 SCBI with given dataset and is correlated to the SCI developed by the World Bank.
