5 BMI results Grade 1 – Total of 503 students tested – 2% were underweight 4 males, 6 females – 64% were healthy weight 167 males, 156 females – 16% were found to be overweight 43 males, 36 females – 18% were found to be obese 45 males, 46 females

6 BMI Cont Grade 4 – Total of 486 students tested – 2.5% were found to be underweight 7 males, 5 female – 56% were healthy weight 150 males, 123 females – 17%were found to be overweight 45 males, 34 females – 24.5% were found to be obese 59 males, 60 females

7 BMI Cont Grade 7 – 537 students were tested – 3% were found to be underweight 10 males, 3 females – 54% were healthy weight 152 males, 136 females – 20% were overweight 49 males, 60 females – 23% were obese 63 males, 61 females

9 Goals for Nursing Provide monthly healthy living information for parents and children – Bulletin boards – Newsletters (each school monthly and quarterly district) – Website – Individual counseling with parental consent – Classroom teaching by nurses during fluoride presentations or in conjunction with physical education classes – Continue before school walking clubs, jump roping clubs led by school nurses. We were awarded a grant from UMASS entitled “School Nurse Intervention and Enhanced School Nurse Intervention for Overweight and Obese Teens” This grant is for both CHS and CCHS

10 CPR/AED/FIRST AID Classes taught for students, (Future Nurses’ Club members, ROTC, Health Career’s Classes) – 123 certified in CPR/AED/First Aid Classes included those for coaching staff Community classes – Nursing Supervisor is a member of the city wide Safety Committee and with Katie Kalbaugh from the Fire Dept we held a community wide CPR/First Aid class for city/school employees: 2012-37 participants 2013- 25 partipants – 8 school nurses are now instructors. – AED’s There are still 7 schools without AED’s. Attempting to find grant money in order to purchase AED’s so all school buildings will be equipped with these life saving devices.

11 Vision Results Number of students tested for vision – 4,453 Number of students who failed and were referred – 829 Number of students who were referred and were actually seen by an optometrist or ophthalmologist – 344 – This equals a completion rate of 41%

12 Hearing results Number of students tested – 4, 449 Number of students who failed and were referred – 175 Number of completed referrals – 4 This equates to a 2.2% completion rate

13 Dental Fluoride mouth rinse program – Nurses provide this weekly in the elementary schools – 84% participation in public schools – 2,506 students received weekly fluoride by the school nurses

14 Dental cont Screenings – 1820 Referrals – 118 Completed referrals – 64 – 54% Sealants – Continue with Academy, Bellamy, Selser, Litwin, and FVMMS – 120 students had sealants placed

15 Celebrations Nursing accomplishments – 2 nurses passed National Certification Exam – 2 nurses completed requirements for their BSN – 4 nurses became certified as American Heart Association First Aid/CPR/AED instructors on their own time – Nursing Supervisor appointed as MSNO region 4 co- chairperson

16 Looking forward…. Increase collaborations with community health services/health care providers/schools of nursing Our theme for the 2013-2014 school year – Professionalism
