Meeting People On-Line New technologies provide users with an opportunity to meet new people. Can you think of some the technologies that enable users to meet new people online?

Tips for On-Line Friendships Be inquisitive and dont believe everything The other person could be a different age or gender than what they say Any personal information you share is potentially made public Employers and schools may not allow such personal use of the Internet

Tips for On-Line Friendships Your ISP, employer or school could access your personal messages The other person may be able to trace your IP address and determine where you work or go to school Give out only limited personal information Take precautions (i.e. Caller ID block) if meeting / connecting off-line

Tips for On-Line Friendships Be aware that anyone you meet on-line could be dangerous Avoid real-world meetings If you are meeting, stay in a public place and inform your parents where youre going Arrange your own transportation

Cyber-Bullying Internet is a growing and popular tool for bullies Involves using websites or text messaging to harass people Cyber bullying can be illegal Ignore bullying messages and report threats to the police and the bullys ISP

Cyber-Stalking Using the Internet or text message to stalk someone Tell the stalker to stop, but only respond once Save all communications from the stalker and report them

Meeting People Online: Summary New technologies have changed the way in which people meet, communicate and interact. The sense of anonymity created by new technologies can make it easier to get to know people, but can also make it easier for someone to misrepresent their true identity.

Meeting People Online: Questions How have new technologies changed the way in which people meet, communicate and interact? What are the benefits? The drawbacks? What implications might using a nym have on forming a relationship? Do you trust the people you meet online? How is exchanging personal information online different than exchanging information when you meet someone in person?
