2 The Helsinki region is expanding Pornainen Kerava Sipoo Järvenpää Tuusula Nurmijärvi Mäntsälä Hyvinkää Helsink i Vantaa Espoo Kirkko- nummi Vihti Kauniainen 1986: YTV Area = 4 cities Helsinki (The Capital) Espoo Kauniainen Vantaa 2006: The City of Kerava (YTV Travel Card system) 2007-2008: The Municipality of Kirkkonummi (YTV Travel Card system) 2010 : A new public transport authority (HSL), 14 municipalities may join in

3 HSL - New public transport authority in the Helsinki Region HSL A local public transport authority that officiates as a competent public authority according to law on public transport Responsible for public transport as a whole within its region Covering member municipalities public transport and commuter rail services within the Helsinki region

4 The owners Initially in 2010 six municipalities: Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava and Kirkkonummi Open to other municipalities in the Helsinki region The Board Based on the number of inhabitants and valid political proportions Helsinki has at most 50 % power of decision HSL - New public transport authority in the Helsinki Region

5 Responsibilities include: Planning and organizing of public transport Transport system planning for member municipalities Granting of transport licenses Marketing of public transport and passenger information Approving public transport fare and ticketing systems and tariffs Ticket inspection Procurement of bus, tram, metro, ferry and commuter train services Participating in the planning of infrastructure development and maintenance investments for public transport
